This is exactly the kind of friction we want to remove: reducing the accidental complexity of leveraging cloud resources so researchers can focus on the science, not the infrastructure.

When they secured $2k from NASA SMCE for cloud infrastructure, being a 2i2c member meant they could quickly deploy a JupyterHub with serious compute (119 GB RAM, 15 CPUs) - no lengthy setup or admin required.

It's also the first paying member of our new membership model - a key part of our long-term sustainability strategy. This demonstrates that organizations value investing in shared open source infrastructure.

This partnership builds on a relationship that's been central to 2i2c's story from the beginning. BIDS has helped shape projects like NumPy, scikit-image, NetworkX, and JupyterHub for years.

As our founding premier member, BIDS is financially supporting 2i2c while helping us design member network services. Together we'll co-design how our member network operates, partner on JupyterHub development, and shape our strategic direction.

They connected grantees with each other, including communities from underrepresented regions, and they even got their hands dirty building their own tools so they understand the challenges of open source firsthand.

For 2i2c, CZI provided the seed funding in 2020 that got us started, then continued support in 2022 and 2024 that helped us grow and sustain our work.

They've also focused on people alongside code. For example, funding a Community Strategic Lead for Jupyter to work on DEI efforts and create pathways for underrepresented groups in leadership.

Beyond funding new features, CZI has invested in foundational infrastructure work - JupyterHub maintenance models, accessibility improvements, and the less-glamorous work that keeps open source running.

These communities have overlapping needs in geoscience education and cloud computing. We're hopeful they can re-use one another's ideas, content, and infrastructure - a little win we wanted to celebrate! ✨
