This is exactly the kind of friction we want to remove: reducing the accidental complexity of leveraging cloud resources so researchers can focus on the science, not the infrastructure.

When they secured $2k from NASA SMCE for cloud infrastructure, being a 2i2c member meant they could quickly deploy a JupyterHub with serious compute (119 GB RAM, 15 CPUs) - no lengthy setup or admin required.

It's also the first paying member of our new membership model - a key part of our long-term sustainability strategy. This demonstrates that organizations value investing in shared open source infrastructure.

They connected grantees with each other, including communities from underrepresented regions, and they even got their hands dirty building their own tools so they understand the challenges of open source firsthand.

They've also focused on people alongside code. For example, funding a Community Strategic Lead for Jupyter to work on DEI efforts and create pathways for underrepresented groups in leadership.
