I am constantly proud to know @mbmcandrews.bsky.social, one of my personal inspirations for keeping it going despite the horrors, and I’m honored to have a small home at the site for a column I care deeply for (soon to return). This is incredibly cool for MB and @dreadcentral.bsky.social both!

The profile reads: “A filmmaker, author and critic, McAndrews’ Dread Central is a go-to website for horror fans. Monday was meant for all the things I’ve found so far from using my library that I was unable to find anywhere else/had never heard of until going through.

Cover for And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, illustrated by Henry Cole. I had been looking for this one since high school as part of my ongoing banned books series, but it’s very nearly as if it had been wiped off the face of the earth. I was able to find only an audiobook version narrated by Neil Patrick Harris, and only through my library’s Hoopla account. Cover for Ian Nathan’s exploration of Guillermo Del Toro’s life and career, depicting the hands and eyes of the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth wrapped in ivy. I had never even heard of this one, but Del Toro is one of my favorite directors to ever do it and reading about his creative spark and passion for monsters and art is one of the things that keeps me going in the creative world. Discovered through my library’s Hoopla account. Celine Song’s film Past Lives. I’d been chasing this one around platforms for a while, and it was one of the first things to pop up through my library’s Kanopy account. One of my favorite discoveries of the year, a beautiful and heartbreaking love story.

weekend marks the 5 year mark release of an album that was very, very important to me, came to me & got me through one of the worst bits of my life to date. I don’t know that I would have held myself together without Halsey’s Manic album. I thank her for it every day. I’d be worse off without it.

Nightbitch is on Hulu now, so I sat with it last night. Infinitely strange movie, adapted from an infinitely strange piece of work. Didn’t go as much into the feral as I expected, but it’s doing something else effectively. Need to reread the novel, but it’s nice that my next column piece is sorted

Started Lucy Ellman’s Ducks, Newburyport in April 2024. Finished just this afternoon. An absolute beast of a book but, ultimately, well worth the time and existential nightmares. Entirely singular experience.

Continuing my journey through as yet unwatched recent releases and I would just like to say, while I have no reason why I missed this when it first dropped, it is a wild piece of work on what women have to do to survive dangerous men.
