I've spent much of the past decade writing about the current desire for labels — cisgender, neurodiverse - because I understand how comforting it feels to shelter under an umbrella term that seems to give your life meaning. But I also know labels can be a self-fulfilling, disempowering prophecy. It is ironic that as society has become kinder to those with mental health conditions, some have forgotten what they actually look like. Parents of children with severe ADHD and autism tell me how frustrated they are by the celebrities and middle-aged people confused by the ageing process who are jumping on the ADHD bandwagon. All I can say is: try being anorexic in the 1990s, as I was, when everyone thought the illness was caused by Kate Moss. I know what it's like when people diminish debilitating illnesses with dubious claims and self-diagnoses. I once spent two years not waiting for a label but in a psychiatric hospital where, in the 18th century, the public would come to gawk at patients. And now we have come full circle, to where getting a diagnosis is seen as a voguish selling point in a promotional email.

As of March this year, around four million working-age adults in England and Wales claimed either disability or incapacity benefit - up from almost three million in 2019, according to research from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). The DHSC said the increased pressure on the NHS "means that for too long, people with acute needs have faced long waits, had to navigate overstretched services, experienced inequalities in care and felt abandoned when support was needed most"

Lay abstract Sharing and giving to others are important for our social relationships. Previous studies show that when given opportunities to share money, autistic and non-autistic people give the same amount of money to people they feel close to, like their friends. However, compared with non-autistic people, autistic people give more money to people they feel less close to, like strangers. In this study, we replicated this finding. Compared with non-autistic participants, autistic participants were more generous to people they did not feel close to. We also found that this increased generosity in autism was not the result of autistic participants responding more repetitively in the task. Autistic and non-autistic participants also showed similar attitudes towards money. We propose that some autistic people could be more generous because they show differences in how they think about fairness. But future studies will need to look at this more closely. We hope that our results can help to change the way people think about social behaviour in autism. While autistic people often face challenges navigating their social worlds, autism can also be associated with more generosity.

The thing was, I couldn't find a truly operational theory in the book's pages. Theory and her earnest, helpful twin sister praxis, that was what I was after. Something to let me know low to proceed, critically. I all but held the book upside down and shook out its pages, but no helpful strategies fell out of it.

Even so, it was the same old town where I'd grown up, a town where boys did things and girls watched. I dimly intuited that my authority was undermined by my very girl-ness. And maybe it was true. Or maybe my authority was undermined by my stubborn sense of myself as an audience member.

• Autism was more common in males (1.5%, Cl 1.0, 2.3) than females (0.2%, CI 0.1, 0.5), and may be higher in White (0.9%, CI 0.6, 1.3) and Asian (1.0%, Cl 0.2, 4.9) adults than in those from Mixed/multiple or other (0.1%, Cl 0.0, 0.5) ethnic backgrounds. No autistic adults from a Black ethnic background were identified in the survey sample. • Living in more deprived neighbourhoods was associated with autism. 1.8% of those in the most deprived areas were identified as autistic compared with 0.2% of those in the least deprived areas. • Few adults had an autism diagnosis. Overall, 3.4% of adults thought that they were autistic and 1.2% reported that this had been diagnosed by a professional. • Autistic adults were no more likely to use health services for a mental health reason or receive mental health treatment than the rest of the population.

editors can’t be expected to see fraud by authors and peer reviewers (that sometimes happens)
Journal editors do not expect peer review to ferret out cleverly concealed, deliberate deceptions. A peer reviewer can only evaluate what the authors chose to include in the manuscript. This contrasts with the expectation in the popular press that peer review is a process by which fraudulent data is detected before publication (although that sometimes happens).

here’s the correction they eventually conceded to
UPDATED: 00:21, 16 October 2011 Last Sunday we said some 3,200 families of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were believed to have been given cars under the Motability scheme. In fact that total is the combined figure for two categories of recipients of the Higher Mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance and includes other behavioural disorders. Recipients choose whether or not to spend their allowance on a Motability car; generally about 30 per cent do so. Also, we described the qualification for the Lower Mobility component, rather than the Higher Mobility component required to claim a car, for which individuals must be declared virtually unable to walk.
