Ancient Jews expected their Messiah to overthrow Rome. When He showed up as a humble carpenter saying His kingdom wasn't of this world, they rejected Him. Too many American Christians still want a Messiah with a kingdom (theocracy) here on earth, and they've embraced the political right to get it.
