ZNF436 associates preferentially with PBAF subunits of SWI/SNF and limits the accessibility at L2/MIR-derived enhancers

🧬 Loss of ZNF436 leads to impaired cardiomyocyte contractility 🫀

🧬 Loss of ZNF436 leads to:
⬇️ downregulation of cardiac genes
⬆️ upregulation of non-cardiac, alternative lineage programs

One of the KZFPs that bind L2/MIRs, ZNF436, is
a conserved KZFP, highly expressed in the developing human heart. ⌛🫀

We first mapped the chromatin state of KZFP-bound TEs in the human genome and found a new twist:
Even ancient TEs (like L2/MIR elements) are preferential KZFP targets — however, without much of the usual H3K9me3 silencing.
