I’m so jet lagged though, in the last ~39 hours I’ve been home, I’ve slept about 26 of them LOL.
Day 30 On the last full day of Japan, some political shit came up and made it worrying, but I also had a chance to see my cousin and karaoke with her. It was interesting to see how similar she and I were, and even though I only saw her once every 5 or so years, we still hit it off great!! Went home late and finished packing for the flight ahead! Day 31 / Flying Home On this last half day, I woke up early to have breakfast with my dad and grandma. We took lots of pictures and laughed at how silly grandma kept taking burst shots or videos. We chilled for a little bit watching TV and hanging out until late morning. Then, saying bye to grandma, my dad and I headed towards his home about an hour away via car. The train station close to his home was where I got my limousine bus ticket from, so we’d have lunch at the station then I’d go on the bus from there. We had a seafood rice bowl and said bye at the bus stop! My flight out of Japan was slightly delayed causing me trouble and worry about my connecting flight out of Canada, but that was all negated when my connecting flight got cancelled altogether 🤡 I ended up with a 14 hr layover (instead of 3 hr), but managed to get home safely with an approximate 11 hour delay. (Never flying Air Canada again lmao) Penguin at the Aquarium, saying hi Seafood Bowl, my “last (supper)” in Japan

Rest of the Japan trip!!!
Day 25 I went out to see my paternal grandpa with my dad! We went shopping and I got a small carry on suitcase and filled it with lots of snacks, all tax free!! We then went out to lunch, which was seafood - I had a sushi bowl (salmon and roe Oyakodon), and enjoyed it a lot bc I love ikura salmon roe so much 😭 After lunch, we went to the aquarium and saw some cool displays of fish — in particular, I really liked the school of sardines and the sea turtles. It was really interesting to me bc since the last time I went (3 years ago), the otter area had been expanded, and the turtle / capybara were in a completely different place. (yes there were capybaras at this aquarium) After the aquarium, we had a quick drink, then dinner. This was next to the bowling place that my grandpa frequents, and we even said hi to the owner of the bowling arena and cafe we were at. Finally, we went and got me new shoes, which were very definitely overdue!! Hopefully now my daily activities won’t cause me too much aching feet XD Day 26 Suuuuper chill day. So chill that the biggest wow of the day was that we discovered that the 500 yen coin recently was changed. There’s a really old silver version (newest coin was 1996), an old gold version (between 1999-2021), and then the new version which has a circle inside a circle and had a silver coin with gold rim. Overall we just watched TV, laundry, and laze around all day. Day 27 Went and visited my great grandma’s grave. It’s been over 10 years since she passed, but I miss her a lot :( she did have a long fulfilling life, although due to the war, it was filled with lots of hardship as well such as losing husband (my great grandpa) and 1yo son (my grand uncle, who would be 82 this year if he were alive). I was today years old when I found that she was with great grandpa and grand uncle in the grave spot, which honestly makes sense but I didn’t catch on until now, 11 years after she passed. We then went out for ramen for lunch, then went shopping for groceries. After coming home, we chilled out for the rest of the evening, with some home made curry for dinner. Day 28 Had a nice hearty breakfast, then headed out to my maternal grandparents’ house - I accidentally left some clothes, so I needed to go pick them up (in my defence, my grandma moved them so they didn’t get packed when I went to paternal grandma’s). Once there, I chilled and had lunch with my mom and sibling, and sort of talked and played a card game. I then went back to my paternal grandma’s with my pants (and some extra snacks) in hand! Day 29 Woke and chilled in the morning mostly, then super speedy lunch time!! The unagi (eel) restaurant apparently gets busy even on weekdays so we went 15 min before it opened, and we were still the 4th group in line!! I was pretty sure that the people who came exactly at open time had an hour wait because of the early people. After the amazing eel lunch, we went shopping to Donki (again) — I wanted to fill the last of my suitcase with some nice Snacks to take home! Grandma was also really happy and surprised with the low prices for her normal groceries. We then went home for a lil rest, then headed out to a Jp BBQ place we’d never been to before for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by their price/quality of their meats!!

Day 24 (Nikko Trip Day 3) Woke early and went to the hot spring one last time around 6 am before breakfast! I had some ramen from the buffet along with some fish and a sushi bowl, then went off to karaoke before check out! After check out started our long drive back home. It took about 4 hours total (not including our lunch break) BUT we stopped by a nearby mall to get me new glasses which was amazing!!!! I am so happy with my new glasses because all the frames there were geared towards Japanese/Asian faces with shorter bridges, so it fit me so much better than the US-made glasses that assumed I had Much Nose when I in fact, do not. After that, we went out for a sushi dinner!! I was super happy I got to cross off basically everything off my “Japan Bucket List (food)” with a week to spare! The Toushouguu Shrine/Temple aka Death Stairs Place (stairs not pictured) Kegon Falls, with an aprx 97 m height and 1.6 L per second of water falling down!! Shellfish!!!! (google says Oyster)

Nikko Trip!!!!! It was a lot of fun, and we actually avoided a lot of rain despite the rain forecast for all three days lmao
Day 20 Had a pretty slow start to the morning, and went to a nearby town to have lunch with a friend from the US that moved to Japan. We came back from lunch a bit later than intended due to just having a lot of fun catching up, that me and my sib’s karaoke plans were foiled! When we got there, they said the wait was over an hour long so we left, and I made a reservation for after dinner. We had delicious Yakiniku (Jp BBQ) again, and we went to karaoke when!! They told me that the reservation was for the next day 🤡 because the app defaulted to the next day, I couldn’t actually get an appointment for the same day and I didn’t notice until too late. We waited 20 min to get in, but we ended up singing for 2 hours! Overall it was a really fun day :) Day 21 Woke up kinda early to do last minute packing, then my Jp dad picked me up to take me to grandma’s (his mom). It’d been about 3 years since I last saw my dad and my paternal grandparents!! So we went out for lunch, got some groceries, and chilled out together for the day. Day 22 (Nikko Trip Day 1) Went on a 3 hour drive north to Nikko and saw Tokugawa Ieyasu’s mausoleum, where he was buried and later rose to godhood. The inner shrine in which he was buried was atop 207 steps of stone-made stairs, which I personally dubbed the stairs of death because my legs were in such pain and literally trembling XD We also saw the various buildings and fun things within that shrine, such as the Sleeping Cat, the Three Wise Monkeys, and the Crying Dragon — they were all so cool and I was kinda sad some of the areas had no photo/recording allowed :( After all of the cool tourist spots, we went to the hotel and went in the big onsen bath. Dinner was a grand buffet style, and I really enjoyed it!! I even had some traditional Jp sweets for desert :D Day 23 (Nikko Trip Day 2) Woke kinda early for breakfast (also buffet style) and then went to see the Three Cascades (/waterfalls). Since my grandma is disabled and can’t walk far (and we were a bit sad about the prior day and forcing grandma to wait for us for like 3 hours), and because my / dad’s legs were dying, we opted to not do the fancy hike and only see the falls themselves. While there was a full 3-hour hike trail (broken into 15-20 min trails so you can join or leave wherever), we opted to park 2-3 min walk from each of the main falls and take pictures with the falls. We first went to Yudaki, which is one of the(? or THE) biggest water falls in Japan. While not a tall fall, it’s a very wide fall. Then we went to Ryuzu Cascades, which is a long winding river/cascades that ends with the falls splitting above a set of large rocks that look like a dragon’s head (this Ryuzu). We last went to the Kegon Falls, a tall waterfall with ~100 m of distance from the top to the bottom of the falls. We stopped by the Michi no Eki roadside rest/souvenir area for lunch and souvenirs, then came back to the hotel! Had a nice hot spring and dinner again like the prior night! However, because it was raining, I had a new fun experience of hot spring Rotenburo in the rain!!! (fun but can’t really recommend lmao)

Kansai Trip came to an end!!! Lots of unexpected but definitely fun things. More pics in next skeet, but as always DM me for more pics lmaoooo
Day 18 (Kansai Trip Day 5) In Kanazawa, we only had a half day as we’d be leaving at 3pm, but we still made the best of it!! We went to the Kenroku-En garden in the morning, a really beautiful display of nature and its wonders presented as a Japanese garden. We then went to the cultural center and made our own kinpaku gold leaf decorated item, which was an amazing experience. Since it takes about a month for the glue/gold to fully cure/dry, and they recommended to put on a clear nail polish after that month to protect it, I asked my mom to take it home to the US to do those things and that I’d bring it home to my home at another time. We also went to the Myourouji Temple (aka Ninja Temple) — while we couldn’t take any pictures/videos of the inside, it was really cool to see the historical significance of this trick room-like temple and where it got its nickname (hint: it has nothing to do with Ninjas but just the fact it had a lot of hidden routes, rooms, and traps!) Afterwards, we went to Karuizawa to our hotel for the night. The specific one we went to belongs to my grandpa’s company and was used as a summer home / retreat for business meetings and vacations. I often went there as a tiny child bc grandpa would book the entire resort for the family; this was all before I moved to the US so it was really nostalgic for me — I didn’t remember the name or the road leading to this place, but once I saw the front, everything started coming back, including how my cousin and I chased each other from the yard into the dining hall (and getting scolded by parents) and the fancy onsen/hot spring bath they had. They then gave us really fancy dinner — there were a total of 18 different dishes, including scallops, lobster, lamb, and wagyu beef, all home made!! It was such a feast that we couldn’t eat it all and we were really sadge n guilty we couldn’t finish it all. We took an overall early night and chilled for the rest of the evening after dinner. Day 19 (Kansai Trip Day 6) Had an absolutely GORGEOUS feast of a breakfast with a full breadbasket of 6 different breads, as well as delicious platters of omelette, bacon, sausage, salad, yogurt, and fruits. After breakfast, we took some pictures and then went off on our trip for the day. We painted our own clay item (I did a turtle shaped piggy bank), went to a trick art museum, and bought a bunch of souvenirs. At lunch, I realized I’d lost my handkerchief and went back to the trick art museum, where I suspected it may have fallen out of my pocket, and sure enough, that’s where it was :) My super lucky handkerchief was indeed lucky and came back to me!!! After souvenirs, we went on the train back to Tokyo to go back to our grandparents’ place, thus concluding our “Kansai Trip.” Our overall route for this trip. Started at Okayama (west Japan, unmarked white circle), then Hiroshima (A), Himeji (B), Nagoya (C), Kanazawa (D), Karuizawa (E) and lastly Tokyo (red marker).

Our next bullet train ride to our hotel in Kanazawa was actually the embodiment of chaos — riding 3 different bullet trains, with only 10 min between transfers. We made it though!!! Went straight to the hotel for some 😴💤 Hiroshima - A-Bomb Dome across the river. Miyajima Island - Itsukushima Shrine Himeji - Himeji Castle (World Heritage Site)

Kansai Trip!!!

Fun pics in the next skeet!!! (and as before - feel free to DM me for more fun pics bc I’m only choosing some pics for public posting lmao)
Day 14 (Kansai Trip Day 1) As mentioned, we had to take an early morning bullet train to leave the Tokyo area 🤡 Literally left the house around the time we would have reached our destination on the sleeper train… The 4-hour bullet train ride was decent, I mostly dozed off for its duration due to the lack of sleep last night; around lunchtime, we finally got to Okayama and so we had food. I had Takoyaki for the first time in forever and almost cried bc it was so good 😭 Afterwards, we went and looked at the historical shopping street and businesses, took some pictures at the museum, and had some HUGE shaved ice! The shaved ice was so good for this boiling hot day, and helped us cool down for only 500 yen!! We continued walking around the town and got some souvenirs, then got some fancy local sushi, then got on the next bullet train to Hiroshima! Dinner was at a local Izakaya and mom and I finally got to have all the seafood we couldn’t have, almost cried it was so good 😭 We had fried oyster and amberjack sashimi, as well as local cuisine like Gansu (a sort of fried fish cake)!! Legit got so excited that I didn’t take a lot of pics 💀🤪 Day 15 (Kansai Trip Day 2) We spent the full day in Hiroshima — in the morning, we went to the A-Bomb Dome and the Peace Park. It was really interesting to see the various memorials and monuments dedicated to various groups of people who were lost on Aug 6, 1945. There was a monument for students (age 12+) who were mobilized and lost during the war, children who experienced the aftermath/radiation, and even to the Korean soldiers in Hiroshima at the time (an estimated 10% of those who were affected by A-Bomb were Korean). We then went to Miyajima via ferry, famous for the torii gate in the water. There were lots of deer on the island begging tourists for food, and so many tourists lining up to enter the shrine and then take a pic of the torii gate. There was also a local festival happening on the island, and a super special Ema (wooden plate) only available twice a year was being sold so the locals were also in attendance, making the area super busy. We did get some souvenirs that we’re all happy about, including Omamori charms and local snacks! Day 16 (Kansai Trip Day 3) Woke up suuuuuuuper early to get to Hiroshima Station to catch our bullet train out to Himeji. This was the One Piece themed train only running twice a day, so that was really cool!!! I got a bunch of pictures, including a “wanted poster” of myself! Once we got to Himeji, we saw the Himeji Castle and the Koko-En garden. Both were so beautiful and historically significant, which was really cool to see. The hill/mountain that Himeji Castle was built upon also had a local god that protected its people, so within the castle there was a shrine dedicated to him. Day 17 (Kansai Trip Day 4) We left Himeji in the morning and got to Nagoya, and saw the Nagoya Castle* , Shopping District, and Aquarium. When we got to the Castle, the ticket booth had huge signs everywhere saying the Main Keep was closed (which was the entire reason why we went there!!) so we ended up just buying the DANGEROUS CREAM SODA for a quick snack and going to the shopping district where we had lunch and picked up some cool goodies. Lunch was local cuisine Miso Katsu, a pork cutlet with a miso-based sauce instead of the usual soy sauce based sauce (SO GOOD) Then we went to the aquarium where we saw some dolphins, penguins, turtles, and even a deep sea gallery talking about the creatures 500m+ below sea level. They were both intriguing and creepy, and I kinda wish we had a bit more than 2 hours to have seen the place more fully.

Day 10/11/12/13 Went to the Kappabashi District for kitchen goods!! My sister wanted to get a fake food sample (like those made of plastic/resin, super hyperrealistic one), and while I wasn’t sure what I wanted, I was definitely super excited to see the cool goodies there. I strongly considered buying a really good knife, but I feared TSA and decided against it. However, I DID end up getting a “make your own food sample” kit (strawberry parfait) and a super cool knife sharpener. Definitely a big investment at 10,000 yen (roughly $70), but I’m really excited for it because you can *see* the knife being sharpened and breathing a new life. Afterwards, I went to karaoke and streamed a bit, although I really want to go for a full day again so <day 11> will likely end up being a karaoke stream day (hindsight is 20/20 and will show what I did LOL) Karaoked for 6 hours on the next day. not much else LOL. The following day, I went karaoke with my cousin! I found he really likes IM@S so I maaaaay need to get into it lmao. Otherwise we mostly stayed home and chilled. The next day was my sister’s high school graduation party (with family). We borrowed my uncle’s restaurant and held the 10-person party there. It was definitely hectic but lots of fun!!! We then went to the train station to start our week-long Kansai (west Japan) trip, since we’re from the east/Tokyo area! THEN PLANS WERE FOILED!!!!!!! The sleeper train was cancelled less than 24H prior due to a fallen tree…. and we only found out at 10pm when it was too late to fix it for the night. We ended up buying bullet train tickets for the next day morning, so while we had a way to fix this issue, we still wasted a half day to sleeping at home and taking a train in the morning ;(((((( Fake food sample!!! realistic af bolognese spaghetti super fancy steak!!!!!!

Next skeet with the Hydrangea video my sister made!!!
Went to Kamakura to see the Hydrangea at Hase Temple and the Buddha Statue! The flowers, while at only 60% bloom rate, were still amazing and super beautiful!! The Buddha statue was huge and really cool, although we skipped going inside it as a huge crowd of maybe 50 or so foreign tourists came in at the same time as us and unfortunately my sibling wasn’t feeling well so it would have to wait for another time. During this Kamakura trip I had really nice Matcha Strawberry Latte, as well as a Coconut Pineapple Shake with my lunch, a miso burger. They were all SO delicious, only down side is that this was a tourist area so we paid tourist prices (~$48 for 3 meals, 1 side, and 1 drink for lunch, when another non-tourist restaurant was ~$19 for 4 meals and 4 drinks) After rushing home bc my sib was overwhelmed and overstimulated due to her budding illness, my sister and I went to the local mall for some arcade games, then went out to dinner for curry! This is where my “professional clown” post came from 💀 Regardless, overall day was awesome!!! The next day, we went to Shibuya for a few things - sister wanted Splatoon merch from the Nintendo Store, and youngest sibling wanted fashion items. I kinda hung out and mostly took pictures of various things at the Nintendo Store, Jump Store (like jump comics like One Piece), Capcom Store, Godzilla Store, and the Pokémon Center. At the Pokémon Center, I ended up getting 2 deck holders. (and most folks here should know it’s for my tarot/oracle decks lmao) My youngest sibling went and saw some fashion clothes, but unfortunately they were tiny size 0-1 at the store and my sib’s well endowedness requires a larger size :( So we had lunch (pretty and yummy but tourist prices) and went home, chilled out with some anime until dinner time. For dinner we met up with parents’ cousins and our second cousins, and had delicious Jp BBQ!!! I’d been waiting for this for a hot min during this trip so I was super happy and excited! Next day was another chill day - the illness my mom caught over the weekend has finally made it to my sister, so the four of them have officially gotten it and i’m probably only safe bc I’m sleeping at grandparents’ place instead of air bnb with them. Watching anime and taking a nap was really all I did XD Mewtwo in its genetic modification pod in an IRL-size display

Day 4/5!! the festival yesterday was lots of fun!!!
Day 4/5: Our plans were foiled by a ticketing system!!! So we got tickets for the Hydrangea Hike for Monday :) Instead, we checked out some museums in Yokohama, including the Marine Tower, Doll Museum, and Baby Star Ramen Museum. Got scared to death via height, saw some cool dolls, and had just as amazing snacks. The Doll House was really cool with lots of dolls from around the world and their stories. Some of the dolls (or doll houses) had exquisite and extremely detailed props to go with it, and that was really cool to see!! The Marine Tower was tall af, and we could see really far out!! Of course as they do with all tall places, there was a glass floor section so you can imagine yourself falling through XD One of the buildings I went to was a historical building that survived some natural disasters (and didn’t survive others) but were rebuilt, and it was interesting to see how the building changed from its original build in early 1900s to now. It also had really nice stained glass windows too!! Went to Karaoke for four hours to avoid the super sleepy times of jet lag, and came home just in time to feel even sleepier 🤡 Next day was a chill day - watched some anime on Jp netflix (which!!! has a lot more options/seasons than US), had KFC for lunch, and generally just hung out at home. For KFC, I had this citrus chicken burger which was really nice!! The citrus-spicy mayo sauce had just the right tang to it, and I really wish the US had better/seasonal stuff bc while having “the usual” to go back to is good, it can get bland and sad if everything’s the same! The next day was a sort of chill day bc my mom got sick :( so instead of going to the summer festival that was about 40 min by train, we went to the one that was about 20 min walk away instead. Mom stayed home and my aunt chaperoned us, and we had a lot of fun!!! I had a “shaved strawberry” treat, which was basically shaved ice but using frozen strawberries instead, and instead of syrup, sweetened condensed milk was used. My sisters got to try the age-old Jp festival games like the goldfish scoop and water balloon yoyo, so they were super satisfied as well. Later, my cousin (aunt’s son) came to hang out, and we played some games and had dinner together. It was rly nice to see him all grown up, bc every time I think of him I see his 5 yo self (aprx what I saw before I moved to the US), and boy oh boy it’s been over 20 years now 🤣 A traditional Japanese cart Omikoshi. Made mostly of wood with some decorative metals or cloths on the sides. there are two paper lanterns with sakura motifs on the front, hanging from a long stick that is affixed to the omikoshi pillars. the roof is lined with smaller paper lanterns of various colors.

JAPAN TRIP THREAD

I’ve been here for 3 whole days and a lil bit now, so!!! Here’s what I did so far!!

Day 0/1: Plane rides (both) were OK and honestly went exactly as expected. No major delays, only a few min difference either way. However when I got off at the airport and tried to get my bus ticket (easy way to Major Station by my grandparents’ house), I found out that the bus was sold out for the next 3 hours. At 1630, the earliest ticket I could buy was for 1900. SO i got on train and while it took a bit longer, I was able to meet up w my family at the Major Station. We also tried to get the Japan Rail Pass (unlimited JR train use for 7 days) but the lady told us we needed an appointment??? and shooed us away. >:( Had good food including cake, and then went to sleep for the night…. but my sleep was trash LOL (spoiler: it will be for a while) The next day, the JRP thing was solved, and the lady we had this time was EXTRA nice and hooked us up. We were officially ready for our Kansai (West Japan) Trip. Otherwise we kinda chill - I went to karaoke and sang for 3 hours (see: YT Stream), which was rly fun!!!! Day 2/3: Went to Team Lab Borderless - a digital art museum (some of which are interactive) - and had a BLAST. It was both mystical and curious and honestly I could spend literal hours there if I wasn’t so tired of walking. There was what we called a Lilly Pad Room where it was made in a way to make it seem like we were in the water below, then slowly rose up through the Lilly Pads until we got above them. When I was in the room, it specifically had fireflies at the top, but the digital display is constantly changing so it could have other things depending on the time I really liked the Cosmic Void room - most of my family found it disorienting (which is definitely a true description, I just would use “floating” as the description lmao) so we left kinda soon out of that room but basically it was a HUUUGE room with a light show on a screen twisting and turning like we were zooming through the universe. 11/10 personally would recommend unless you get motion sick easily. Literally walked 6 mi this day, which was WHOA to me bc I usually only get in half a mile of movement, maybe 1 mi at most LOL. On the way back home, I stopped by Karaoke with my sibling bc we were tired af and going home at 1500 meant we had a real chance of falling asleep and letting jet lag beat us. (spoiler: we’re still jet lagged regardless) The next day was an overall chill day, and we just went shopping at a mall nearby. I got some snacks I was excited about getting, and I’ll definitely be purchasing more before I go home LMAO.
