I’m knee-deep in cleaning up my studio that’s been neglected for years. Finding gems all over the place and throwing away the rest.
A torn piece of a coloring book image in a hand with the text HOME SWEET HOME framed on a wall. Gray marker scribbles are across the page. In a hand is an old oil-soaked envelope with visible security markings/hatch marks. The text Please Don’t Fold and a smiley face are visible on the top of the envelope. A shop vacuum is most distinguishable from all the debris. A small anchor and tools hang on the wall.

Saw two great shows: Lionel Maunz @ Bureau Gallery and the group show A Rose Is @ Flag Art Foundation. Lionel’s work felt like a mash-up of Kienholz, Barney, de Bruyckere and Folkert de Jong rolled into a dark melange. Loved Belanger, Feher and shockingly Kiefer the most in this great group show.
A bouquet of red and pink roses wrapped in paper all made completely from glazed ceramic. Fingers emerge from within the bouquet. A plastic rose with stem is cemented into a dated 80’s paper coffee cup. All elements show their age and deterioration. A nude male figure whose flesh is sagging off his incomplete body gestures towards a large sow with a metal bit held in his hands. The feet of a plaster/chalky body is illuminated by overhead lighting diffused by yellow plexiglass. The figure is inside of a duct or oven as if they are about to be cremated.

Went to the Whitney Museum and saw a great Gee’s Bend quilt by Martha Jane Pettway, a super Martin Wong painting, surprising photos by Peter Hujar and a great graphite drawing work by Michelle Stuart that makes Brice Marden look easy.
