Dec. 7, 1925: President Coolidge rejects any relief plan for farmers that would involve the government buying their crops. "The moment the government engages in buying and selling farm produce, by that act it is fixing prices,"" he says in a Chicago speech.

Many reporters went to Albany, Georgia, when it became one of America's first COVID hotspots.

But @propublica.org's Ginger Thompson kept returning, kept reporting.

What she uncovered reveals some ugly truths about American healthcare.

Read her new 5-part series, Sick in a Hospital Town:
As Phoebe Memorial Grew, the Health of Albany, Georgia, Declined
The five-part series, “Sick in a Hospital Town,” pursues one question: Why are people in Albany so sick when its most powerful institution is a hospital?

the reason why those "the left made me do ___" things ring so hollow is that Trump has been, since 2015, the primary actor in US politics. everything, in some shape or form, has been a reaction to his assault on the sanctity of the US constitutional order
2020-2021 was a particularly bad time but as long as Trump kept upping the ante the polarization was going to happen anyway

i'd go even further and say there is a reason even nixon kept this kind of stuff to himself. you would have to go back quite a bit to find a point at which is acceptable for a president to say anything like this *in public*, to say nothing of in the oval office.
I don’t want to be pollyannish about the past, but it was basically inconceivable twenty years ago that a president would say this publicly
Trump: "It’s a hellhole right now. And those Somalians should be out of here. They've destroyed our country. And all they do is complain, complain, complain. You have her. She’s always talking about the Constitution provides me with – go back to your own country and figure out your constitution."

British trans people had to go to the European Court of Human Rights in 1986, 1990, 1992, 1997, 1998 and 2002 before the UK was finally forced to pass the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

How much work to regain lost rights will they need this time?

Okay so I rewatched it and there are some legitimately solid points here. BUT it was and is genocide, you HAVE to acknowledge the rabid bigotry fueling the conflict. And she doesnt.
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

Also, the largest sub-demographic shift in public opinion on Israel-Palestine since 2023 was among Democrats aged 50 years old and up. Hillary Clinton is obsessed and hung up on explaining a generational gap which has basically been closed, and not in the way she wants.
like basically all post 2016 discourse around disinfo is framed in a hypodermic needle media theory lens and I hate it so much
It's become normal now for high-level political figures to argue that an entire generation was brainwashed through fake videos into mass anti-Israel political mobilization by TikTok. Complete conspiracy thinking, rooted in zero evidence, based on nothing

Wait that's insane
I have tried to get RealID three times, and every time they told me I had the wrong paperwork, even when I pointed out that I had all the correct paperwork. My theory is the DMV just doesn't want to deal with it. Now I just carry my passport.

Lol, Zillow tried to rate the climate risks facing individual properties. The real estate industry *hated* it, precisely because it worked -- it made selling risky properties more difficult. So they rebelled & Zillow caved.

Reading up on the 1950s Giants and it's wild that after the game fans and players alike would exit the stadium by going onto the field and walking together towards the center field gates. The clubhouses were next to those exits, and players didn't wait for fans to leave, so they all walked together.
