Our new preprint is about the airway epithelium microtubule network, cilia, basal body protein composition, averaging of volumetric fluorescence data, and expansion microscopy.

I am looking to hire a postdoctoral fellow to work on a collaborative project at the Mechanobiology Institute with the inimitable Sasha Bershadsky, focusing on interactions between the nucleus and the cell-ECM junctions in directed cell migration.

Don’t entirely agree with some of the details wrt LINC complex, but overall a concept I’m very much on board with.

We got some help from Brian Burke & @ylleecellbio.bsky.social with a DN-KASH #nesprin construct, allowing us to sever the cytoskeleton from the LINC. Since these cells become osteogenic like WT MSCs, nuclear deformation is sufficient for confinement-induced #differentiation. (7/n)

I have confirmation from several sources now that all T32s, many F30s and F31s, and most or all Center awards (P30, P50) have been terminated at Columbia.

This is quite damaging to research and to individuals.

This is pure terrorism and cannot be legal. But litigation will take time...

Many of these grants are fellowships and training grants supporting smart young people interested in bettering the world through their research. It is sad to see NIH funding used as an indiscriminate tool of retribution.

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

This is catastrophic for US research universities as it ignores the real cost of doing research. The US academic-gov’t partnership forged post-WWII is the greatest creator of knowledge in history and is critical to US economic and technological competitiveness.

A long post about what’s happening to the science funding agencies in the US and why. As mentioned, this one just kept getting longer even as I kept stripping curse words from it.

🚨New paper out!🚨

Excited to share our study published in Science Translational Medicine. This 5yr project was led by Susan
@dutcherlab.bsky.social and Steve Brody.

We asked a simple question: why do some PCD patients develop more severe lung disease than others?

Undocking of an extensive ciliary network induces proteostasis and cell fate switching resulting in severe primary ciliary dyskinesia
CCDC39 and CCDC40 variants interrupt the motile cilia assembly program, disrupt cilia architecture, and alter motility-independent cell functions.

Hope it’s helpful but warning: now a v long thread!

Probably the last time I can do this...

Do you know the story of how Albert Coons (pictured) developed immunofluorescence microscopy?

I find it's a really interesting story, & it shows how important a supportive environment is for research.

It also gives an impression of science during World War II.
