Today marks one year since being officially let go from Pixar. One year since what was my dream job became the absolute hardest year of my life.

The film industry and animation in particular are vastly different landscapes now than what they were even a year ago. Let’s talk about it.

One of the most frustrating thing about being an LGBTQ filmmaker isn’t that we have to face discrimination and performative tokenization at the hands of corporate egos— no rather it’s the assumption that we are “the right kind” of LGBTQ as opposed to the kind that begs to be seen as creative equals

We as members of a community who are near constantly under siege flock to the imaginative ethereal as an escape and at least for me, use it as an attempt to offer secure safety for others in my community to find themselves in.
And we'd love for that embrace to be given out of kindness, not ceded after begging.

I have a theory about why lgbtq+ folks are "obsessed" with making media more queer and trans, whether it's creating fan AUs or original stuff, and it's not because we're "self-centered and need everything to be about us".

I also designed a bunch of stickers for Kai! They were placed throughout her room and on her skateboard. The late-game censorship removed a lot of them (including the cracked eggs, which I'm shocked got flagged) BUT our girl Nimona made it to final 🦈💖

This is a small snippet of amount of care that went in to developing Kai, every department from casting to story to animation to lighting, and everything outside and in between, handled her with a reverence and kindness that I wish I could hand deliver to every trans person who needs it right now.

The fact that there’s this incredibly weird and alarmingly idiotic conspiracy around KFC’s latest ad campaign about chicken and gravy as though we’re all eating human flesh is proof to me that the human race doesn’t need to continue.

This film implemented one of the most interesting forms of found footage I’ve witnessed in that it gives our antagonist the camera and puts the audience at the mercy of an otherworldly demon. Of course there’s many examples of newer implementation, ala Insidious or Hellhouse, llc.

Im convinced the future of filmmaking is going to be like being an indie artist/band and here’s why:

Love seeing the responses to Kai’s episode from #winorlose. The community has codified it as an official trans episode and I’m here for it. Many viewers see the small facial reactions, change in clothing and body language as confirmation of Kai being trans.

A short essay before Kai’s episode of #winorlose airs on Disney+.

For more on the human impact of Disneys censorship here is a previous article from Hollywood reporter. They interviewed myself and others who worked on WoL and gave feedback on Kai’s character:

Most of the reviews for Disneys Win or Lose seem consistent in their analysis that the show is thoughtful and well made up to the point where the censorship occurred :/ www.looper.com/1793445/win-...

Despite my own personal grievances with Disney, you should absolutely watch Win or Lose. Allot of amazing and talented folks made that art and you should really support them so they can make more amazing things!

This article from the Hollywood reporter puts Disneys issues of censorship into real world context. Both audiences Disney purports to try and cater to can entirely smell the obvious disingenuous motives that go into removing content from their projects.

Disney’s Win or Lose comes out in less than a week and my emotions are mixed on the whole project. As a former Pixar employee I had the privilege of working on this show in a small way. I’d like to talk about my experiences and how I think it relates to the future of Disney.
