When European explorers arrived in Asia and Africa, they came across many wondrous creatures like the #pangolin. They believed the armored mammal resembling "a large animated spruce cone" was a formidable living tank that developed an impregnable shell "hard enough to turn a musket-ball" by old age.

An overlooked part of Taiwan's colonial history is that the Latin script arrived long before any Chinese, brought by European missionaries during their brief colonial attempts, but adopted by some Indigenous languages for long after
"Taiwan is home to over 20 living languages, and many of them don’t require a single Chinese character. In fact, some of the most vibrant linguistic revival movements happening on the island right now rely largely on extended Latin alphabets," says 姜呈穎 of JustFont.

Important topic. Though I'd like to emphasize that despite the standardization efforts for the Latin-based orthography, there's a variety of "unofficial" writing methods for these languages being used. I've even heard of someone still using Kanji. I think it's great, even if a bit impractical.

Social media functions as a "distorted mirror," explains @pumashen.bsky.social, e.g. 3% of accounts generate 33% of posts; 1% of online communities are responsible for 74% of conflict; 0.1% of users drive 80% of #disinformation.
