Week 2 #NFL drive chart #DataViz!

Did a few visual tweaks and had to deal with random things like whatever the heck the Steelers did with that Seattle kick-off.

If anyone has any tips on designing headers and borders then please let me know. I'm terrible at that bit!

Thought I'd try something very different tonight so here is my first experiment with QGIS - a neon outline of the Isle of Man and its famous TT course. I'm very pleased with how it turned out as a first quick go.

Every week, myself and a couple of others do a round-up of some of the best #SportsViz we’ve seen.

The focus is on the #DataFam but we sprinkle in other things to share inspiration and cool stuff.

This is a cool way to see whether a team won through overwhelming firepower, clinical finishing, being the least worst, or some combination of the above! #DataViz

Super Bowl LIX matchups

While both teams had impressive records and tore through the playoffs, not all units were elite. The Philadelphia Eagles have the advantage in three phases of the game.

Finally got my #NFL #DataViz dashboards up!

The first does single games like my original post below, and the second one does these whole season reviews which incorporate the single games too. And I added a little bit of drive info too.

Just in time for the #SuperBowl #DataFam! Links below 👇

I had a go at making some #NFL drive charts! I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

I wanted to go with something that felt a bit more minimal (I am forever inspired by @barelymaps.bsky.social) and believe it or not, this was the more minimal version...

Fascinating sociological observation. I hadn’t thought about it like that but now I can’t stop thinking about it like that.
Theological is right: on some level a lot of the industry is convinced they’re building a machine God.

Everything we know says people anthropomorphise “AI” capabilities, and overestimate them. It’s happened since Eliza. But “this time it’s different”.
There are some AI people who genuinely think that this is a question of expertise: who is able to 'understand' the future. It's starting to feel more theological than scientific at this stage.

If you're the kind of person who likes thinking about the sky (and I am!) this is a wonderful visualization to explore. So many patterns, each with its own story.
For the 4th year in a row, my all-sky camera has been taking an image of the sky above the Netherlands every 15 seconds. Combining these images reveal the length of the night changing throughout the year, the passage of clouds and the motion of the Moon and the Sun through the sky. #astrophotography

Dataviz people, what say you? Do dashboards usually fail?
Do dashboards usually fail? A quick two question poll here ➡️ www.surveymonkey.com/r/K6YGR6Z

I'd also love your thoughts on how you see that changing and why. AI? More data literacy investments? New year, new opportunities to help people us data.

This has been on my mind, is this true? 🤔
Yeah, I feel uncomfortable criticising others work because I often lack knowledge of the context and I know I feel 'attacked' myself the other way around (+still insecure on my skills). I would rather like for us to take a more positive stand 1/6

There is no growth without criticism and the stagnation we're all dealing with now in the field of data visualization is partly based on our collective discomfort with calling out meaningless and unreadable charts and diagrams because we don't want to seem mean or imply the creator is dumb.

Some interesting comments & quotes in this post.

Personally I see quite a lot of innovation, and people pushing the boundaries of things, but I’m in a relatively small corner.

On the criticism, I think this is a side-effect of #dataviz being both inherently creative and a relatively new field.

I really like just about everything they do on NPR’s Tiny Desk, and Billie Eilish’s very stripped back set is a great example of why. Excellent adapted versions.
