the Dark Lord of the Brunch
Oddly enough, we did have amendments to the constitution around these times; & maybe we didn't do enough of these things, but we very much did pass 2 amendments re voting & other civil rights after the Civil War
We needed to have another Constitution after the Civil War and another in the late 60’s/early 70’s to solidify the gains of the Civil Rights and Women’s movements. Maybe throw an extra in during the Great Depression to establish a robust welfare state with positive liberties.

If you read music theory too hard you become pure bebop
If you read theory hard enough you become a historian, this is absolutely the case
even as a theorist I feel like I half agree with this

same, also I do like Forbidden Planet (1956) better than Percy Stow's The Tempest (1908)
His Girl Friday. The Maltese Falcon (but not, admittedly, The Maltese Bippy). I like the original Scarface best, but way more people prefer the DePalma remake, same goes for The Thing.
When has a remake of a great movie improved upon it? Has this…ever happened?

Forget it, Jake
“I don’t understand what produce in the Central Valley has to do with fires in LA” this is the subject of one of the most famous movies ever made, in which it is explained to Jack Nicholson at length by the director of The Maltese Falcon

How did this kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism become illegal to build in most American cities?

“Americans did not choose car dependency. We didn’t vote for it, and it was not the winner in a free market competition. The real answer is complex, but a single turning point reveals an essential part of the story.”

The 100-Year Road to Car Dependency in the US
October 8, 2024, marks the centennial of the publication of what would soon become the Los Angeles Traffic Ordinance — a landmark on the road toward our car-dominated status quo.

Brunch is the manifestation of sloth, of eating the first meal of the day with a mindful mindlessness and no consideration for deadlines. It is always a good time for brunch.
An important part of growing up is realizing that brunch at 2pm is insane. It's obviously supposed to be at 10 or 11. Not breakfast, not lunch, something in between. Anything later is sloth.

Dependency
The whole API is a pile of files in a S3 bucket. I have a Python script that generates a bajillion JSON files, one per ZIP code. I put that behind Cloudfront, and don't bother with API keys or anything. It costs me upwards of several dollars a year in hosting costs. github.com/waldoj/frost...

I'm 61 years old. My grandfather in the 1930s wore cologne by Givenchy until it ran out some time during World War 2 and then he switched to Aqua Velva.
