Ahmadenijad was Iran’s Trump. Populist, jingoistic right winger who upset the apple cart. His reelection, that so many people could have voted for him, fried the brains of liberals so much that conspiracy theories were invented to explain it. Strong parallels with Trump 2016

Big thank you to @pessoabrain.bsky.social for hosting me yesterday in the Neuroscience & Philosophy Salon!

The lecture focused on how properties of human language like syntax might be neurally enforced, and included some critical discussion of the LLM literature.

Is the the neuroimaging community (broadly conceived) submitting to 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 again?????

Not to be publication police but the shift had seemed major 1-2 years ago.
Looking at the editorial board it seems to have serious scientists once more.
Curious about thoughts of the community.

Independent contributions of language activations in left and right temporal cortex to aphasia outcomes after stroke
Recovery from aphasia after stroke is thought to depend on functional reorganization of language processing in surviving brain regions. Many studies have investigated this process, but progress has be...

Five years ago, I pulled my hair out over the cancel culture being promulgated by liberals. Now cancel culture has returned with a vengeance, perpetrated by the right and bolstered by the full weight of state power. Depressing. The solution is robust protections for free speech.

In my opinion, one constructive way to engage positively is to join your local union. At the university of South Carolina, this means United Campus Workers ucwsc.org
and also @aaup.org Free speech rights are being eroded, workers rights attacked, and the only way forward is to fight together

Provocative piece and more interesting than most that have been written about this topic. I greatly encourage people to weigh in!

My own perspective is that while there is utility to LMs, the scientific insights are greatly overstated.
📣@futrell.bsky.social and I have a BBS target article with an optimistic take on LLMs + linguistics. Commentary proposals (just need a few hundred words) are OPEN until Oct 8. If we are too optimistic for you (or not optimistic enough!) or you have anything to say: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
