The Inheritors was published 70 years ago today! Golding wrote the first draft in an astonishing 29 days and it was his favourite of all his books. We'll be celebrating this novel over the coming weeks.

Ours - a very nice, almost excessively polite man- had to read out the word 'bollocks' in Lord of the Flies and god the anticipation in our wretched infantile adolescent class. And he really went for it, bellowing it out properly so that it silenced any possible sniggering. I admired him deeply.
