Last night, the light was soft & warm. I caught this pregnant doe unexpectedly; she clearly didn’t know whether to freeze or to run. Partially screened by foliage, I got the picture and quietly retreated without disturbance.

Bee-Eaters; the clue is in the name…

Here the male passes a tender, freshly caught Bee to his partner in the hope of getting the chance to mate with her.

Captured in Spain with my guests last week using my OM – 1 mkII and 150-400 mm F4.5 IS Pro Zoom.

In case you missed this, a wonderful European Bee-Eater, photographed with my group in Eastern Spain.

Nothing fancy, it was shot on the OM-1 mkII with the 1 50–400 mm IS pro lens and a shutter speed of 1/4000 second.

Why do people let their unruly dogs gallop chasing ground-nesting birds on both coast & common grazing?
If you can't keep your dog under close control or haven't trained it properly (why, one has to ask!), then keep it on a blooming lead!
It's lambing AND nesting season for goodness sake.

The Swifts are back and their joyful screaming makes everything feel better!

Is summer really here? My need for a light winter coat yesterday evening may suggest otherwise

It looks like Private Eye, who used to boast about its refusal to be cowed by libel threats of all kinds, caved in meekly to behind the scenes pressure from the shooting lobby over some cartoon adverts by the wildlife charity Wild Justice.

They’re back! One of the enchanting Hobbies, hunting insects in North Somerset today. It’s a dramatic sight with the birds twisting and turning to catch tiny insects and eat them on the wing.

Previous to the FDA, folks would put chalk and plaster of Paris in milk to make it appear white. They could also add formaldehyde to cover the smell and taste of spoiled milk.

The cuckoos are back in South Erradale! Dawn was filled with their cuckooing. It never ceases to amaze me that they undertake such a journey to come here, to our wee valley 😊

Song Thrush.
Here's an increasingly rare sight - a Song Thrush at the edge of a pond, collecting muddy vegetation for the lining of its nest.
The bird will sit inside the nest and slowly circle around to create the smoothest clay lining, on which to lay its beautiful sky blue & black spleckled eggs.

Knepp Castle estate in Sussex,
spiritual home of ‘Wilding’, the genius book by Isabella Tree. Too early in the season for the turtle doves or Nightingale, but seeing Storks flying wild and nesting in the evening sun was very precious.
