White text on a black background. "You good?" I ask. His face looks eerie, lit by only the scarlet glow of the clock. The light ripples across him in waves as he shrugs. "Nothing I can't handle. Just..." Even in the dark, I can see him flush. "I just don't want to be alone right now," he finishes. "Not in, like, a weird way, or anything, I'm just— I'm making this worse, aren't I?" "Maybe a little." I say. I laugh a little louder than I meant to. but a quick glance at Andee's bed reveals that he is still sleeping. Typical. "I have nightmares," Red says. "No worries, man. I get it." Red sighs. "Yeah. I guess. I just... He doesn't finish the thought. "Your nightmares," I ask, already anticipating that I'll regret the answer, "Are they about... your, uh, past? Like, before you... got here, I mean." Red nods. "Yeah. I haven't exactly had a stellar childhood. Which makes it so much more fucked up that I'm... like this. Who'd purposely design someone to be this screwed up? It's like building a machine you already know isn't gonna work." I shrug. "Don't ask me, man. I just live here." He smiles slightly. I look at the clock. It's not even four yet. Red catches me looking. "Sorry, I'm not great at making conversation." I flush. "Me neither, clearly."

There is one character in my story who explicitly has kinks and he has… all of them? lol. That’s an exaggeration ofc, but he is definitely a bit on the extreme side of things. Found this screenshot of a post a while ago that I think sums up his interests well lol.

White text on a black background. I tune out the rest of his speech, instead taking inventory of the crowd. It's more diverse than I thought. But there's definitely a different vibe than public school. I'm not sure how to describe it. Maybe it's the seas of white shirts and navy blue bottoms, the dead silent atmosphere as if each and every one of these rookie students are already terrified of Mr. Queen and the school he commands. Maybe they're worried that if they step out of line then they'll violate their parole or something. Give it time. After the first few weeks, the whole dynamic is going to change. New students are going to settle in to their routines and their old bad habits. They just need to get a feel for their environment first. The teachers are all woven into the spaces between the tables, like poorly disguised undercover cops. Obviously, they're here to keep us in line while Mr. Queen speaks. I shudder to think about what that might mean. Are private schools allowed to use corporal punishment? I mentally remind myself to Google it later.

I'll make up some excuse and follow him out the door and we'll wander aimlessly around the neighborhood together and talk about some empty fantasy until the sun starts setting. We could wander down to that park down the road and make out on the swing set like some fucking romance novel. But the doorbell doesn't ring, and eventually I give up on waiting and eat my burger.

White text on a black background. As promised, Aunt Tracy isn't here. I blast my music as loud as I can and wander the halls like a ghost. There are no pictures of my parents. About a month after the accident (or The Accident, as I call it), she smashed every frame and threw out every picture in a depressive rage. I can't say I blame her. But sometimes I miss their faces, and I wish they were in the house watching me grow up. Although maybe it's good that they never saw the mess I've become. They can die feeling like they succeeded. That burden falls on Aunt Tracy. Not that she's at fault. I'm pretty sure my mess is my own. But she's the one left to deal with the steaming pile of fresh shit that my parents left in their wake. One last dump before they were gone forever. Thanks a lot, Mom and Dad.

I can imagine it's not easy moving homes again." "Is he moving? He didn't tell me that." "Oh. My bad. I figured he mentioned it to you. Sometimes I forget..." She trails off, but I think I can guess her meaning. "That you can read minds?" I finish. Her eyes flash as she looks at me. "Yeah. That. It's hard to tell, sometimes, what people say and what they... don't." "Is it like... constant? All the time?" "Not exactly. I have to be focusing on someone. But I don't exactly like going around invading people's thoughts. It's just that, sometimes, Nicole likes to mess with me. I'll be walking down the hallway and the kid four feet away from me is fantasizing about killing and raping his English teacher. Or the girl behind me is tugging on her earlobe four times to stop the intrusive thoughts about hurting her little brother. There's no shortage of fucked up people here." Annabelle cuts her cinnamon roll in half with the plastic spoon with a little too much force. The handle bends. "You can say that again," I say. I risk a glance at Mr. Smith. His back is to me. I swallow the nausea. Annabelle looks up. "What'd he do?" "Get out of my head," I snap. "Sorry. I didn't mean to pry. That's what I mean."

So many things that could go wrong. It's a boarding school. That means roommates. That means meals will be served, and monitored. Bathroom breaks will be clocked. Every word, every movement... I was worried, but now I'm full-on terrified. I can feel the panic attack coming, the pressure building in my temples, the alarms going off in my brain.

I'm filling in the second-to-last bubble when a shadow over my desk makes me flinch. When I look up, Mr. Smith maintains eye contact for just a second too long. "When you've finished, please raise your hand, and I will come collect your work." He's still staring at me when he says it. I wait until someone else raises their hand, pretending to review my answers (Am I even allowed to do that on a personality test?) and then I raise mine. Rule number one: Never finish first. Always wait for someone else. Being the first to finish means you stand out too much. Both to the teachers and the students. The student who raises their hand first is a blonde kid who looks like he's five feet and ninety pounds, max. He's absolutely dwarfed in his chair by Mr. Smith, who is just as uncannily skinny but at least a foot taller and a century older. Mr. Smith seems to revel in the little scrap of power it gives him.

No sign of the blonde mystery guy. I'm not relieved, though. Maybe he's here somewhere, and I just can't see him. Why would he be here? Then again, if he's in my head, then of course he'd be here. Still, I'd like to keep the crazy contained to Forest Step, at least. I don't like the idea of the crazy following me home, tagging along to my therapy appointments, trailing around behind me like a ball and chain. I look around again on my way to the bathroom. Nothing. Maybe it's just cold in here. I did see a fan running. Maybe that's it. I'm just on edge. Right.

That only steels my resolve. You were here before Forest Step, weren't you? Before Marsheen. Still no response. I think about the last time I had a period. It's been about a year and a half. Red said he'd been here for about a year before we met. And what happened around that time? It was the accident, wasn't it? "Kid, it's not quite that simple." Just tell me. Enough of your weird secretive bullshit. "Yes. It was the accident. That's how we work. When you undergo something traumatic, it changes your brain. Again, just science. For us, that means... it's easier to get in. Think of everyone's head as a room behind a locked door. Technically you can still get in, but you either need a key or you need to know how to pick locks. Most of us don't have that skill. The accident was like taking an axe to that door. Leaves room for us to enter. How big the axe is and how wide the hole is just depend on the individual. Sometimes minor things bust the door wide open. Sometimes the axe just bounces off. You people are weird like that."

"Ow," she says drily, rubbing her face. "That wasn't very nice, Wright. So much for your 'Nice Guy' act." She doesn't seem too hurt. I'm not sure whether I'm relieved or disappointed. "I've never claimed to be nice. Nicer than you, maybe, but that's a low bar."

White text on a black background. I missed Aunt Tracy's shower. Hot water that actually works. Being able to adjust the water pressure. The fish-patterned shower curtain. The fluffy blue bath mat. It's familiar. Normal. It's also easier to avoid looking in the mirror. The bathroom is bigger. More space to hide. It's easy to lose track of time. No roommate to share the hot water with. No clocks. Just the rhythm of the water drumming in my ears, washing away everything. All my pain. All my worry. All my dirt. All the thoughts. It's a package deal. I still haven't decided if I want to keep the buzz cut or not. I content myself by picking at the out-of-place strands of hair, letting them slip between my fingers and slide like strands of a spider's web down the drain.

She was the only girl I ever confessed to. Mostly because she's the only girl I've ever liked who wasn't straight. I know, my taste in women is terrible. But hey, at least I don't have to worry about my taste in men. I told my parents I was lesbian after me and Yena started dating. They were fine with it. They always were cool like that. My parents used to tell me about how my ancestors were Quakers, all that shit about tolerance and love and how we're all God's children, blah, blah, blah. I don't really think my ancestors would actually have loved me, but they don't matter now. They're dead. My parents loved me. But they're dead, too.

Well… not exactly wrong, but not right, either. I write about gay mentally ill teenagers having supernatural & traumatic things happen to them. My life isn’t that exciting, but it does explore a lot of my feelings lol.

Not just a freak— we've always been that. There's something alluring about being an outsider. That's not what this is. I've become something worse now. She screams and the mirror shatters.
