Ace Attorney (2012)

I haven’t played the Phoenix Wright games in years, but I did once dress up as Detective Gumshoe, so I think I’m qualified to declare this a great adaptation. Ryo Ishibashi nails his big monologue. Really need to catchup on post-13 Assassins Miike, I’m woefully behind.

Now it can be sold! The new @umbrellaent.bsky.social Blu-ray of the Yusaku Matsuda movie The Ressurection of the Golden Wolf (1979)! I wrote an original essay for the booklet included with this incredible Japanese crime thriller.

Suit Yourself or Shoot Yourself!! II: The Escape (1995)

Two films in and it already feels like hanging out with old friends. Show Aikawa is hilarious in this, but Ren Osugi (and his little pudding cup) is the MVP.

Michael McDowell was the best to ever do it, and by “it” I mean writing horror paperback originals about weird southern families.

A reminder that there’s a treasure trove of classic jidaigeki TV on Tubi, featuring Tatsuya Nakadai, Shintaro Katsu, Sonny Chiba, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Here’s a list of what I’ve found thus far.

Everyone, but especially Columbo fans and/or 90s Japan-heads, needs to watch Furuhata Ninzaburo, which I would describe as Evil Columbo.
Columbo may have had Robert Culp as a killer, but only Furuhata Ninzaburo had Chairman Kaga.

The Age of Assassins (1967)

Nakadai plays it like Carey Grant in Monkey Business with a serious case of athlete’s foot, as he absent-mindedly dodges assassination attempts by a series of increasingly oddball killers. Features a mechanic named Otomo Bill. Extremely my kind of movie.
