TIL (via this fantastic piece from my colleague @fiona-murphy.bsky.social) that director Rian Johnson was reared an evangelical Christian, and that faith was the "lens (he) frame(d) the world through" until his early 20s: religionnews.com/2025/11/25/t...
Rian Johnson on miracles, mystery and his own faith story in 'Wake Up Dead Man'
(RNS) — The third installment of the ‘Knives Out’ series examines the spiritual warfare within American Christianity and looks at writer-director Rian Johnson’s struggle with the essence of faith.

To put a finer point on this whole thing: "Two people with direct knowledge of the operation" — presumably uniformed military leaders — are accusing the U.S. Secretary of Defense of personally ordering specific war crimes. That's a historic accusation.
Textbook war crime/extrajudicial killing

"Two survivors were clinging to the smoldering wreck. The Special Operations commander overseeing the Sept. 2 attack ... ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions."

Hegseth order on first Caribbean boat strike, officials say: Kill them all
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to kill all crew members in the Sept. 2 strike on a suspected drug boat. Navy SEALs fired a second missile.

"Josh Allen grew up on a farm, so I got to make sure I play Good Charlotte, blink-182, Panic! At The Disco and GloRilla" is a sentence I will ponder for a long time
Which NFL players are the best (and worst) locker room DJs? What music do they play?
The key to a good DJ is understanding the room's vibe and being versatile -- and not always playing NBA YoungBoy.

Grateful for a world where people will still do stupid things in community for a T-shirt and banana. And that I didn’t break myself on the icy stretch.

NEW: Earlier this month, I spent the day with the Luhmanns — a family rooted in theologically conservative Christianity.

In the morning, the homeschooled teenage sons tracked ICE.

In the afternoon, the mother aided an immigrant mother whose partner was deported. religionnews.com/2025/11/25/h...

“What would a society look like if it valued our time as much as our data?”
We're drowning in passwords & multi-factor authentication & chatbots & "unusually high call volume" & robots ignoring "representative!"

We should think more carefully about how Social Security uses these tools with our parents & grandparents.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

This got me thinking….how do we as a society normalize pumpkin pie as a breakfast option at restaurants year round? Who will be the change we want to see in the world?
It turns out Mina and I have identical pie takes (literally had home made pumpkin pie for breakfast this morning before kids woke up).
So my pie take is there are no bad pies, but some pies have to be eaten a certain way:

1. Pecan: Always good

2. Fruit: Must be homemade. Otherwise bad.

3. Pumpkin: Best eaten cold at 7 am standing over a sink before everyone wakes up

Next up: AI ruins Thanksgiving.
The Butterball hotline better staff up to try to save the day.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
