Here is the Newsweek magazine article that led to the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," marked up to show key passages that Lightfoot borrowed. Short thread at quoted post. Thanks to @bikeguy.bsky.social for reminding me about this. #EdmundFitzgerald50

LOL apparently stood for “Land of Lakes.” The sign for Harry’s Cafe at 11th & Nicollet is visible in the background.

This is such a great thread, especially for garden heads. I once heard the North American Prairie described as an upside down rainforest, meaning quite a bit of a plant’s growth is underground. Also like a true midwestern garden nerd, I love this chart 💚🌸
There’s a famous chart from the Conservation Research Institute, which demonstrates this. GAZE UPON THESE ROOTS, YE MIGHTY AND DESPAIR.

Jacques Pepin and Lidia Bastianich! Multiple rewatches of Wolf Hall! Several seasons of Finding Your Roots! All the Rick Steves and Ken Burns you can dream of!
btw did you know you can subscribe to PBS for only like $5/mo or a $60 one-time for a year donation, and get access to their Passport streaming service? They mail you a little live programming guide and everything, too. The 40-something seasons of NOVA alone are worth it.
Donate to your local PBS/NPR stations. It's up to us now.

This can be one of the biggest mental blocks to starting creative work—you want to write, but your words don’t come out like your faves. You want to draw, but your lines aren’t nice like the pros. Well no shit, 1) they come out like you (which is good!) and 2) everyone’s rough to start. Practice.
And I have never been able to write like the people who inspired me--I am nothing like Tolkien, Adams, or King. But I am so grateful that they helped me become myself.
Sounds right. I thought, Maybe I can do that, and I started trying.

It has always been a problem with the use of the phrase “machine learning” that models like these, unlike human beings, cannot actually learn anything. If the status quo is racist, they will remain racist. They can parrot antiracism, not because they have learned it, but because someone else did.

Funny how "erasing history" only applies to tearing down Confederate monuments, emphasizing the role of enslavement in the development of the U.S., & renaming military bases named after Confederates, but not to acknowledging historical Black, Brown, queer, and trans folks
