Making Stockport a better place to walk, wheel, and cycle.

How do!

We're Walk Ride Stockport, new to Bluesky and with a shiny new logo. We're all about making Stockport a better place to walk, wheel and cycle.

Back in June we celebrated the completion of the helix ramp (aka the HelterSKelter) at Stockport Interchange – take a look!
There are two active travel consultations currently under way.

First, 'Chester Road Highway Improvements' – a shared path from the Poynton Bypass to Bridal Road in Woodford.

Deadline 30 November.

This consultation closes today. Please read this thread and respond to the consultation if you can.
Back in 2020, Stockport Council consulted on a walking and cycling scheme along (or occasionally parallel to) the A34. It was a mixed bag, but local campaigners supported it with several caveats.

It’s back for another consultation – because part of the scheme is being dropped.

The Peak Forest Canal closure at Turf Lea/Strines just now.

No warning whatsoever from further back until you are right at the bridge at either end. From the Disley side that’s a very lengthy turn back if cycling, having to use part of the A6 and some very hilly rat runs.

⛔️ Peak Forest Canal towpath completely blocked at Turf Lea/Strines for major works. Solid metal fence going up now. No good route Marple-Disley.

Preferable to a collapsed canal but an *unbelievably* inconvenient stretch to close with seemingly little publicity or thought to cycle & wheel diversion.

⛔️ Middlewood Way closed north of Bollington 17th-26th November. Where it often gets wet, so very welcome, but awkward to avoid!

Provided you can use steps, the best diversion would be via Macc Canal from Holehouse Ln to Hawthorn Rd. Canal and return to trail is step-free at least and no hills.

Well said @walkridestocky.bsky.social - here’s evidence from #Edinburgh.

It’s the standard change curve.

bsky.app/profile/sw20...
Like every city, despite vocal opposition, this multi-year study of an #Edinburgh street and cycling scheme shows massive benefits and increasing public and local business support.

Every city that delivers schemes well helps deliver social and economic benefits.

We need more #StreetsNOTRoads!

We weren't approached for comment on this, so we'll do it here.

We've built lots of new sustainable travel routes in the past 5 years, so our Corporate Leadership Team (CLT) got on their bikes for a guided tour.

A highlight was riding the new ‘Bridgescape’ path, from Station Rd through Interchange Park and down the Spiral Ramp onto the TPT.

Walk Ride GM was horrified by the recent news of a hate crime against Klaudia Mitura on the Ashton Canal.

There is no excuse for violence, including this example of male violence against women.

Incidents like this are made more likely by a widespread press and media bias against cyclists.

Fed up with pavement parking?

We're supporting @livingstreets.bsky.social to show where pavements are used as car parks to the detriment of all who walk/wheel.

Go & take photos (make sure you cover over reg numbers) & upload them to the Living Streets map: lnkd.in/ekEmPn3q

🚨 URGENT ASK to help us push micromobility forwards in Greater Manchester 🛴

Your local authority has until 21st October 2025 to apply for an e-scooter trial. We believe e-scooters are a crucial part of the shift away from cars, so PLEASE email your councillor and ask them to apply.

I keep meaning to go and check it out, but Street View has beaten me to it for the new filter under the Peak Forest Canal on Green Lane, Romiley.

Surprised this big local win hasn’t been celebrated more. One of those “wouldn’t it be nice if” that they actually did! Well done Stockport Council.

The removal of the awful kissing gates and other access improvements, along with the high quality all-weather surfacing is a real game changer. Very pleased to see this section of the Heatons Cycle Link completed @stockportcouncil.bsky.social @walkridestocky.bsky.social
For context, the paths used to be inaccessible and only possible to walk with wellies in the winter.

A thread about the damaged/degraded section of the Middlewood Way, and some good news.
*Finally* just been told (via Neighbourhoods, via Highways, via Arboriculture, because they don’t class it as Rights of Way) that the rights of way officer will be taking a look in the next couple of days. 🫨
