All in a Dream

I am not sure how long it has been, since I awoke to this dream.

So long ago, I found myself in my home, faded and empty. My family was nowhere to be found, and my voice did not seem to travel beyond my body no matter how loud I shouted for help. It was frightening at first, but it did not take me long to realize I was simply asleep. I always had a unique tendency to discover when I was dreaming, yet never found myself waking up until the alarm came for me, or the things reached their natural end.

What bothered me in the beginning was how uneventful it was; surely a dream would not be so dull? It certainly was not typical. But once I returned to my bedroom, I realized I had merely not been paying attention.

The mirror.

Through the mirror, I could see myself, lying on my bed, motionless. I thought for a while that I may have been asleep, but that was before my body began to wither. At first, my skin sagged and dried out, and the color had faded from it before I even noticed. It was strange… that it did not bother me. I had always been unnerved by the sight of the dead, but about the sight of my own corpse, I learned I was entirely apathetic.

And then, time marched onward. I learned quickly that I could see my family as well, through the various mirrors about the house, and even faintly in the reflections on the windows and the television. I knew they would eventually discover my body and prepared myself for their reactions, but they hardly even seemed to notice anything was amiss. My parents seemed frustrated by my laziness, always lying in bed; my siblings would come to my room and show things to me, as if I were roused from my eternal sleep simply to take a look. Everybody went about their routines, without so much as a pause to consider why I had not left my room.

And then, slowly, the rot set in. I could see very clearly as my body’s flesh began to break apart. At times, there were flies and moths that would sneak in when the front door was held open too long, attracted to the scent that my family had gotten used to. There were less bugs that you might think; my father had always paid for pest control. The family cats even began feeding on my body when someone forgot to refill their bowls. And yet, at this sight, I still found myself merely curious at best; more often than not, I was simply bored. There was not much to do on the other side of the mirror.

I have since stopped counting the days. I sing songs to myself to pass the time. Sometimes, I watch others play games through the windows. But the tedium has long overstayed its welcome. I used to think that dreams served no purpose. I would have said before that they are merely musings of the subconscious mind given unnecessary attention. But I have started to wonder; why, exactly, I am being made to sit idly for so long? There must be some sort of purpose to this dream, but in all my pondering, I cannot think of one.

Perhaps I could discern it with a clearer mind, once I wake up? But how much longer must I wait for the answer? What sort of natural end could such a dream come to? What is the logical conclusion to the tedium of everyday life?

I suppose there is none. So all I have left to do is lay here, in harmony with the body I see through the mirror, and wait.

Wait, for the beckoning call of the alarm.

It will all make sense once I wake up.

Or perhaps not.

It was all in a dream, after all.
