Theologian, violist, knower of things and spinner of plates. I strive against chaos. Trying to overcome false dichotomies: heart and head, Baroque and Romantic, Schleiermacher and Barth. More Bach please, and Brahms. And DSCH too.
I had #burnout real bad when I went on my short sabbatical. I'm glad that I'm not in such a state now. But it seems that the conditions of my work that led to my burnout have not changed. That concerns me.

I'm in my last few hours of my 7 week sabbatical. Grateful, wistful, ready, yet not ready. Tomorrow will be very busy. I can do this. But do I want to?

There will *always* be a market for prejudice. Even in churches. They may lose some members who can't any longer abide the hypocrisy and thinly veiled hate, but anti-gay churches will be fine. (Or "fine.") They'll continue, or even increase.

Just (re-)watched Rogue One.

Seems appropriate.

Happy Modalism Sunday to all who celebrate.

I really wanted to go to the #HollandMI #NoKings protest today, but I've got a bad cold. Fie! Saw on the Zuck-space that several friends (and -ish) of mine went. Yay! One acquaintance said that thousands were there. In little Holland!

Today I got my viola back from the shop, just a cleaning. It's gorgeous! I hadn't played in a week (unusual because I've played 109 days this year so far). Scales, Dounis, Bach, Clarke, Hindemith. Such joy! #violist #classicalmusic

I'm not typically an anniversary person (except for wedding, obvs). But I was reminded (by FB) that today is the 15th anniv. of my Ph. D. graduation. Such a mix of feelings in all this: pride, regret, loss, gratitude. And just 10 days ago a colleague was like "Oh, I didn't know you had that!" 🙄

"So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them, and though there were so many, the net was not torn." John 21:11.

I'm a net. And I'm about to tear.

I didn't blow my top during a meeting today. Do I get a prize?

Sometimes it's something slid into a report for an upcoming meeting that feels like a gut punch.

Fellow dudes need to get therapy and spiritual direction. Ugh.
Sometimes I think it was super weird that Berlioz married Harriet Smithson after seeing her perform one (1) time on stage, and then I remember that on two separate occasions after performing I received 100% sincere offers of marriage to strange men, so I guess that has just always been a thing

Thrilling concert tonight with Edgar Meyer, Tessa Lark, & Joshua Roman! I've been following Meyer for at least 13 years. It was (partly?) through him that I became aware of Lark. Such amazing musicians. I am sure that @smarcorodriguez.bsky.social and @emjayveeem.bsky.social would've loved it.

Great, another email asking for detailed information. I expect it will likewise take almost an hour to answer and that, again, I will never receive acknowledgement of my response (much less thanks).

Another concert in the books, to be repeated tomorrow night. Bloch Concerto Grosso no. 1, and a world premiere symphony by a local composer. Glad to be section principal, as it gives me the opportunity to hone skills. Grateful for my fellow violists.

A few days ago, I blurted out "I don't have quirks. I have character flaws."

Too much?
