my correct view is that LA is not the second most important american city because LA is not a real city at all. It’s a bunch of really big highway rest stops that calls itself a city. You can’t be a city when there’s parts of your urban region with 1 hour bus headways.

No we are not going back down this road. Trump is the enemy. Talk about him. Make him poison, and everything he's ever done poison, and everyone who ever supported him poison. They wrecked America, pile the debris on their heads until they're crushed.

In 2025, "When they go low, we go high!" is the equivalent of taking a big swig of whiskey to "get rid" of the flu. It's no longer relevant.

Different time. Different strategy. We adapt to the time or perish, holding on to nostalgia.

The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services has repeatedly claimed: “If you’re healthy, it’s almost impossible to die from an infectious disease in modern times.”

That is dangerously false.

every tech ceo from musk to zuck has just been trying to rip off Steve Jobs. The entire culture of Silicon Valley is just a bunch of Steve Jobs wannabes. But none of them can really match up. Mostly for lack of sex appeal.

New substack post. This one’s about why we’re all so stuck in the face of Trump’s onslaught.

Free trade is good. Lower prices are good. Abundance is good. Tariffs and higher prices are bad. It’s not patriotic to shoot your economy in the foot because you’re mad that some jobs are going to other countries (esp when we have such low unemployment). Trump’s tariffs will make America poorer.

Ethan Klein gives the lie to all the right-wing grifters who “left the left” and ostensibly got radicalized cause of cancel culture or whatever.

Bro was gaslit by the world’s most insincere and hateful communist for a year, yet still never abandoned his progressive values.

It’s a valid criticism that Democratic messaging is unacceptably weak right now. But if I look at your post history and all I see six+ months before the election is about how you voted Jill Stein because Biden is an evil genocidaire, stfu. You people can teach us nothing about effective messaging.

One reason Trump is popular rn is because he's so careless with words that you can just project whatever beliefs onto him that are most convenient for you.

Want to pretend that Harris was to the right of Trump on immigration? It’s so easy to just ignore everything he actually said. (thread)

the only AI thing that i’m absolutely and unreservedly in favor of is auto translation. I feel like there’s entire worlds of opportunity for cross-cultural communication being unlocked there. Everything else it does is just mild annoyances made slightly easier at best.

hasan piker is a misogynistic, misinformative american diabolist. “The joe rogan of the left,” only in the worst possible way. But as disappointed as I am that my senator is speaking with him, I am more disappointed in liberals’ inability to build a new media apparatus as an alternative to him.

China doesn't want to keep TikTok because of the user data— it has plenty of other ways to get that. It doesn't want to sell TikTok because of the influence it gets from controlling one of the most powerful content delivery algorithms in the world. This is obvious, I fear. (Thread 1/6)

We have Id democracy, but people clearly actually want superego democracy! They hate populism even as they vote for it. Take their expressed preferences seriously, don’t just go by revealed preferences!
Someone we talked to recently voted for Trump in part because Harris' campaign, with all the high-profile celebrities, seemed un-serious to her.

We can have all the judgments we want about how anyone could look at those two candidates and say Harris was less serious, but I think there's more there.
