now do the 'ask chatbots to simulate the social scientist asking stupid questions'

There is a lot of fuss today over whether chatbots can replace human participants in social sciences research when the solution is obvious: ask chatbots to simulate the views of social scientists and survey them on attitudes towards chatbots as substitutes for human subjects.

It's really good language and not only for trans women! It's a unifying mechanism and it is so helpful for doing away with the misnomer that black women are "masculinised" when that's not at all what's being done to harm them imo!

I need a lot of trans people, especially trans mascs, to realise that "degendering" isn't just a new word for "misgendering". Degendering is a word for being thrown out of your gender without being treated as your agab. "Regendering" is often what you're looking for, instead.

Brianna Ghey was not murdered for being Esther Ghey's daughter, and Esther locating the problem of her daughter being murdered by radicalised cis kids in her daughter being trans is a result of her class loyalty. She simply wants to prevent kids from being trans. She gets no more grace from me.

trans women have been dealing with 'major recession' levels of unemployment for years and now we're watching payment processors close off the sex work a lot of us rely on to make ends meet

they won't need to round us up for camps if we just starve I guess

Or is it simply a question of following the fashion for how these things are talked about? In that case, how does that sit with your own values?

If so, why? Are you under pressure to do so? Where does that pressure come from? What would happen if you resist?

When you are using the "AI" framing, does the way you talk about "AI" carry water for the Sam Altmans of the world? That is, are you helping to paint a picture of their tech as inevitable, all powerful, and/or anything other than commercial products?

So as a contemporary category, I don't know 'the West' has much value.

As a category for structuring a history course, I think a definition of 'Western History' on the above lines - wheat farming, near eastern states, Roman legacy - works, if we are honest about what it includes.

That expanded definition also gets you a 'Western Civilization' that actually amounts to the name: a collection of countries who *do* share a civilizational tradition, whose traditions of farming and the state derive from the same sources (Egypt and Mesopotamia).

But 'the West' as 'heirs of Rome' also includes rather than excludes the Eastern Mediterranean and much of the Islamic world. Islam, after all, emerged when the Roman empire (in the East) still stood and was heavily influenced by it.

Early Islamic writers engage a lot with Greek/Roman literature.

First, it *also* obviously includes S. America. That's useful to note - 'Spain and Portugal are the West but Brazil and Mexico are not, but the United States is' is just a giant ball of special pleading rather than a coherent position.

'The west is rich countries' is not a useful definition.'
