If you want to disrupt a poorly run nonprofit or the larger system, hi! Whether you work in a poorly run nonprofit or are tired of the broken systems it’s time for employees to organize and push back.
Every person I admire actively de-learns and learns fresh.

They are self aware enough to realize what they knew in the past may not apply to the present.

The only nonprofits I have loved working at have done the same thing.

Progressive vs regressive. It’s a voice isn’t it?

My hope is that leaders from the nonprofit world become ultra-tribal in response to this week.

Circle the wagons in the home org and learn to take better care of employees.

Transactional interactions are a sign of a nonprofit in need of help.

“Do this and I’ll give you that” is not mission driven work. We are meant to give because we are inspired.

When you give an employee a seat at the table, real power, and the ability to speak, work communities improve.

Culture change is as simple as this.

If you run a nonprofit that “helps”people then helping employees comes first.

It is impossible for unfulfilled employees to help clients. You can’t give away what you don’t have.

I’ve worked at some unbelievably awesome nonprofits.

The common thread through all of them is that they have alignment between their mission and people. For most, they first use the spirit of their mission to build their employee culture.

A struggling NP is misaligned.

When a nonprofit aligns their mission with caring for the human, rather than work, needs of employees transformation is easy.

Satisfy belonging, develop trust, build talent, share power- employees fulfilled like this blossom.

If all of us who are having to “work” without a true relaxing holiday break stopped being mad at ourselves in a thousand different ways and turned that anger towards our specific boss, company, or system we would FEEL better.

If we joined with others, we would make real CHANGE.

To all that must work like holidays don’t exist, thank you.

To all of you who work to make the holidays special for someone else, you are the best of humanity.

Find your people and combine your power. Let’s join the best in humanity to ensure that ALL of us can celebrate.

You value democracy?

Keep this in mind. Where most of us spend the most time is overwhelmingly the most un-democratic.

Workplaces are largely authoritarian and shut most employees out of power and say.

Support democracy by pushing for change at your job.

There are easy and hard ways of doing things.

Force, pushing, exertion- it’s all limited.

Alignment, collaboration, flow-are limitless.

A truly great workplace knows the difference.

Coming across a person who you vibe with unexpectedly is one of Life’s greatest pleasures.

Some people are just so gosh darn awesome and inspiring.

If you work in a crappy place try your best not to accept it.

You can change the world by learning to push back against the dumb boss, stupid policies or broken system that is causing your suffering.
December 22, 2024 at 3:18 PM
The root of the problems that so many of us are experiencing is established authority has run out of answers.

Whether it is the govt or the boss, they are not looking out for you. We are on our own to make change.

Accept this, take a breath, and bravely commit to advocacy and action.

Perfect example of how a nonprofit can shoot itself in the foot.

My friend works at a nonprofit.
Her husband was diagnosed with stage4 cancer.
She asked to take time off.
It was flatly denied.

She is stressed and her co-workers are pissed. That is a poor organizational decision.

The overwhelming value of any nonprofit is made by direct care staff.

Clinicians directly counsel.
Care workers directly tend.
Teachers directly teach.

You are the ones doing the work. Don’t ever forget how powerful
and essential you are.

May Santa bless each nonprofit team with:

- clear mission
- shared power for all
- a deep care for all employees
- shared voice, discernment, and commitment

May they then go happily together to truly meet the needs of their clients.

Get clear on your personal resonance. It is the best radar you have.

For those you resonate with authenticity is easy.

For all others, there is nothing you can do except for give up pieces of yourself to relate.
December 20, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Sad to say, but often nonprofits exist as “you vs them”.

Senior leaders and direct care employees are typically not on the same team. They want different things but the power imbalance is total.

Your desire to change the world starts at work and is where you learn advocacy.
December 20, 2024 at 12:34 PM
If you work in the nonprofit world make one very clear change.

Become an expert, advocate, champion for the mission of the work not the org.

Often the system hurts the work and you must be independent.
December 20, 2024 at 12:09 PM
If you work in a nonprofit closely examine your view of employees.

Sadly, most orgs don't value employees until they reach the senior leadership tier. Many have accepted this belief.

You can not reach any Mission if the people on your internal team are not valued more than the work you do.
December 19, 2024 at 6:49 PM
A poorly run nonprofit tries to meet their mission first.

A well run nonprofit builds inside to out. They care for employees, build a community internally, and then together create outside impact.

I say I “don’t care” but discovered I’m lying to myself.

I don’t WANT to care but still trade vast amounts of energy trying to prove, appease, or make comfortable people I don’t love.

This is a helpful realization that I want to shift out of.

The only thing that currently feels good is breathing. I can find satisfaction in that one action.

All else feels challenging, useless, or sad.

Always thought my world would be a bit more robust in this time of life, but breathing it is.
