These roles were budgeted through June 2026. The librarians got an hour to pack their stuff and were escorted out like criminals. One of them is 61 and had worked at the library since she was a teenager.
Baltimore County Public Library lays off 14 part-time employees
The positions were due to be phased out since 2018, when the library decided to no longer hire part-time librarians.

I saw a person on TikTok calling up churches to tell them her baby hasn’t eaten for a day and ask if they can give her formula. Most say no.

Meanwhile my local independent bookstore has turned a back room into a free food pantry and encouraging people to donate pet food too, since pets are family.

"I asked ChatGPT"

Yeah? Well I asked Lady Catherine de Bourgh and not only did she give me the wrong answer so authoritatively I was struck silent, she criticized the precise color of the red in my bonnet and invited me to dine at Rosings Park but only after I fixed it.

Main character energy is OUT, this summer we’re bringing NPC energy. We’re posted up at the bar dropping lore and suggesting side quests. We’re leaning casually near a locked door and saying “I don’t think you have the key for that” when someone tries the handle. We’re staring at a tree.

Put in perspective, the same people who were supposed to get $10,000-$20,000 of their student loans forgiven because they were Pell Grant recipients–poor kids like me growing up–are the ones being absolutely targeted in this bill.

You don't need to reply with "that's intentional." We know.
The bill that House Rs passed, which Trump is pushing, could result in at least 700,000 kids losing access to financial aid for higher ed, and raise costs for countless more.

All this comes as Trump blames foreign students for taking US kids' slots. 4/

No.

Universities do not have to be "in sync with the administration and what the administration is trying to accomplish."

They are institutions of learning led by scholars who follow their research in search of knowledge. They support free inquiry and learning.

They are not political pawns.
Linda McMahon: "Universities should continue to be able to do research as long as they're abiding by the laws and in sync, I think, with the administration and what the administration is trying to accomplish."

We also have the Great Depression to thank. In CA and many other states, the CCC was put to work building our highways and improving existing dirt roads. With new highways and post-war prosperity, the streetcar was doomed.
did you know that the automobile companies were the ones behind the death of the mass streetcar movement?
Agree - it should have been done already in areas that have public transit. Also concerned about the idea of public transit itself, i.e. the vast majority of the US has little to no public transit to *make* free. Trains + streetcars would be vastly popular if ppl had them, but a hard sell 😭

Also a valid point. The Library of Congress is in the legislative, not executive, branch.
Why is the President being allowed to fire the Librarian of CONGRESS, of the Library of CONGRESS. Where is CONGRESS in all of this?

As of today, Trump has fired two of those three.
