This article is going to haunt me for a while, but I think I'm still glad I read it.
The first time I tried to read this piece…I couldn’t get through it because I was uncontrollably sobbing by the time I got near the end

It’s beautiful and heartbreaking.

Read it: www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...
“The River House Broke. We Rushed in the River.”
The July 4 Texas flooding ripped our Kerr County home from its pillars, pulling us into the water and into the night. Then morning came.

If you had, say, 26 eggs sitting in your fridge, what would you be making to use up these eggs in the next couple weeks?

It's not the main point here, but you absolutely do not have to credit DOGE with inventing the concept of "what if government was more efficient".

Am I out of touch for actually being excited about Berlin having a chance to host the summer Olympics (and for thinking the city can definitely pull it off)?

Love raising my city kid who, every time we pass a certain bush on the way to Kita, reminds me about the time we saw two rats fighting there.

Here is proof that the outfit was produced.

Thanks once again for your contribution, @debblanch44.bsky.social!

Should I put this design’s file and those of others on GitHub?

Is anyone interested in producing any of the dozen-plus different designs for their colleagues or friends?
Let me know!

I helped build a government AI system. DOGE fired me, rolled the AI out to the whole agency, and implied the AI can do my job and the jobs of the others they've fired.

It can't. But, what DOGE accidentally revealed about themselves in the process is fascinating. 🧵

"Your team's advice carries more weight than an external consultant" is a sentiment I heard from agency partners on a regular basis. They knew we had their best interests, rather than self-interest, in mind when we made a recommendation. 3/

18F alum here. While I appreciate the well-deserved attention the 18F team is getting, let's address a fundamental misunderstanding of why 18F was so effective in working with other govt agencies to improve their digital services and why starting a consulting company is not a substitute. 1/
If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company.

It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create.

They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms.

I’m happy to invest and/or help

You should know that a big part of 18F's work was to make sure multi-million to multi-*hundreds*-of-millions dollar contracts at fed *and* state level didn't go to shitty enterprise IT consultancies that *repeatedly* delivered tech that didn't work, was late, or didn't even do what it needed to

A new Insta trend: workplaces (esp hospitals & care homes) in Germany show how they, how *we* all rely on migrants who work there, how they are part of this country, our friends, colleagues. We'd be poorer w/o them. They are appreciated. They are us.

But these savings require both federal employees savvy enough to look for alternatives, and a healthy competitive ecosystem of vendors. The US was *just* rebuilding institutional capacity to scrutinize and save on contracts. It's a damn shame to lose that, and it's the opposite of efficient. (3/3)

Can someone tell me what medical condition Germans mean when they talk about having "Rheuma"? Is it arthritis? Or is it just a vague catch-all for swollen, painful joints? Somehow I've never been able to figure this out (and afaik in English we don't talk about someone having "rheumatism")
