Case in point: there's an active Mastodon security exploit. Getting the fix rolled out everywhere (including heavily customized servers) is very difficult. And if someone does get remote code execution on all instances, the attacker can do *permanent* graph damage that backup restorations won't fix

We do not condone death threats and will continue to remove accounts when we believe their posts represent targeted harassment or a credible threat of violence. But not all heated language crosses the line into a death threat.

…they get reported to their home server. If their home server doesn’t take action, my server can either block the person from interacting with it at all, or defederate from their entire home server, preventing any intersection between the two servers. This is how you ban fascist servers, etc.
