Nice piece by Simon Barnes. When I think of Cruyff, in the modern era I think of Finn Russell. Always has all the time in the world, creates magic constantly.

Hearing that Unhedged has gone viral thanks to 🌮, my first thought is that “what will the astonishing comedic talent of @katie0martin.ft.com come up with to top her colleague ?”

Congratulations to Crystal Palace, and a reminder to us all, by the way Manchester City fell off a cliff after Haaland said it, of the importance of always staying humble.

Yes, and in cities with narrow roads (such as South London), drivers of these cars tend not to know the width of their vehicle so just don’t leave room for those going the opposite way on the (shared) road.
Cars are getting 1cm wider every two years. That may not sound much, but over time it adds up, and they're showing no signs of slowing down 😬

That's #carspreading. Our new campaign is calling on city leaders to make parking policies fairer by varying costs based on the size of a car.

In Cayman we never used to have street names, but as part of our emergency services system implementation we needed to name them all. The street naming committees lost imagination after a while. "Off the Beaten Path Road" is a favourite!
I like neighbourhoods with themed street names. In Belfast there are ones named after rivers (Mersey, Severn, Dee, Tamar, Yukon), Scottish hills and lochs (Cheviot, Grampian, Nevis, Lomond) and the Middle East (Damascus, Palestine, Jerusalem, Cairo, Jericho). The last area is known as the Holylands.

One idea for @judithfreedman.bsky.social

"Contractors" now pay both EE and EER NIC via the Umbrella route they are forced to use for self-employment. This incentivises companies to use this route rather than employ people. What if we made the "employer" pay the EER NIC?

I had stage 3 colon cancer, chemo ended 2.5 years ago, still on various checks quarterly and annually. It is what it is and it will be what it will be (or not). Congrats on your clear test.
FUCK YEAH STILL CANCER FREE.

first quarterly scan of the year this morning. still gotta do them every quarter for a year as im a stage 4 cancer patient.

i functionally fall apart as these appointments approach. getting clear scans feels amazing, like i just won a round at a death game.

Excellent essay, Paul, truly thought-provoking.

Two thoughts.

First, I used to explain Jon Stewart (vintage Daily Show) to Brits: "he skewers pomposity". That is how to deal with Prigs.

Second, Plurality. I consciously spend time with people I don't agree with. Keeps the mind open.
I just finished a new essay about the origins of wokeness. I'm going to get flak from both the far right and the far left about it, so to save all our time I'll respond in advance to what I know they'll say.

Adore Fonda and the staff make it extra special. They love what they do. Have been twice already and going back with a dinner club soon.

PS love that @jayrayner1.bsky.social loves Lebnani in Reigate too. A man of great taste, clearly 😊
At Fonda, a New Mexican restaurant, they serve a Baja taco which is a veritable supermodel of the fish finger world; a veritable Heidi Klum and David Gandy. And there’s so much more to love. This week’s restaurant review.

That said he did say to do it at 2am in an empty parking lot, not at a junction 😜

My career has been largely based on learning internationally and taking those ideas into another country. I recommend casting the net wide, eg Netherlands, France, UK, Canada and others. Each have their own strengths and gaps, then you can design one for the USA learning from them.
The issue isn’t whether Universal Healthcare can work. The issue is how do we get from where we are to UH. It took Canada decades and it has a ton of limits we might not like.

The point being we have to find a starting point that can grow it into what works here
