Meant to mention this last week, but if you have a young person in your life who’s into history or graphic novels or just good books, buy them George Takei’s “They Called Us Enemy.” My oldest couldn’t put it down.

I used to use this strategy, the PROP method, to teach critical thinking skills in American history twenty years ago. It's as helpful and relevant as ever. How do you know something is true? How do you evaluate what you are hearing or reading? The kids always loved "reason to lie." Be skeptical!

I realize I’m just shouting into the wind here, but: please, please, please stop posting screenshots without links, or summarizing breaking news events without links. There’s a serious problem with unsourced assertions all over the world right now, don’t be part of the problem.

Don’t shame people for not immediately reading all the books they buy. Some books aren’t made to be ready right away, okay? Some books need time to mature. Some books need to cure for a while. Some books are prosciutto, and don’t you forget it.

If you're reading a book at bedtime that you're very much enjoying & you get to maybe 80% in and you think "I can finish this now" DON'T DO IT. You won't savor the ending as much as you did the rest of the book. And you will be tired the next day. And there will be no more of that book to read.

I guess libraries are up next on the chopping block . . . One of the main ways that libraries in Oregon use federal money is for the summer reading program. The library gives away a free book to patrons for signing up for summer reading and 1/2
President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum & Library Services would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide. We call on all Americans who value reading & learning to reach out to their elected leaders.
