Cos we all need it today, a post-election erection:
An ancient Roman amulet from the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, comprising a dick, with a tail and wings made of dicks and, well, a dick for a dick.
One for @partialhistorians.bsky.social to add to their, um, impressive collection.

Today’s ‘huh, that was a thing’ charity shop find, can we all agree that this level of Corbyn-mania was a bit weird?

Thoughts and prayers to all the parents whose kids didn’t get the memo about daylight savings and are now faced with an extra hour of parenting before bedtime.

And prayers for me, whose toddler started chattering at an unconscionable 3.40 am.

It‘s an emotional rollercoaster. When we’re up, we’re up, and when we’re down, we’re down.
My thoughts go out to the people of York who are currently dukeless

Every single English person seeing Tim Tams for the first time: ‘oh, they’re the same as Penguins’

English person eating their first Tim Tam, a tear rolling down their cheek: I did not know that such biscuity perfection was possible, my life was incomplete until this moment
It's pronounced Australian.

And it's objective truth. I bought two packs of penguins (regular & mint) while I was in the UK last year, because they are so often compared to our Tim Tams.

And I found peguins wanting. Wanting, I say!

The absolute bloody cheek, after months of throwing trans people under the bus and a week of outright pandering to racist rhetoric on immigrants, for Labour to ask me to come back to help combat Nigel Farage.

Been going to the gym for 2 months now, having never gone before.

One thing I’ve learnt: if an exercise has the word Romanian, Russian or Bulgarian in the title, you’re about to fucking die.

11 days ago, I turned 40 without much fuss and a quiet belief that nothing much would change about me.

This evening I went to take out the bin, looked down and saw what was on my feet…

I am once again contractually obligated* to note that this is out in two weeks.
And I think it’s pretty good. And I would be delighted if you pre-ordered it from your preferred retailer.

* Not really.
Exciting news for me. Pre-orders are open.

Shrink wrapping books in my bookshop days. Wrap them in plastic and shrink the plastic using a heat gun, think an industrial hairdryer.
Put the heat gun down, dropped it off the table and caught it by the (very, incredibly) hot end.
I swear I heard my skin sizzle.
What's the stupidest way you've hurt yourself?

Oh I'm so glad you asked! I knocked myself out with a frozen bag of omelettes.

if you are a cis person it costs you nothing to just say today that you see & hear your trans sisters & brothers & others over in the UK today -- and around the world, too, knowing that rulings like today's ripple out in ugly ways.

An adorable #Roman toy horse on wheels, with a small hole in the nose for a string to pass through to pull the little guy along the floor. It has some painted detail including a blanket/saddle on its back; it is 1800-2000 years old - but looks just like a modern toy! 🐴 (📷BM) AncientBlueSky

‘Gaul is divided into three parts. And then the bears moved in.’

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus, lost, driving around in circles.
Heraclitus’s wife: ‘we’ve crossed this river already’
Heraclitus: ‘no we bloody haven’t’
What about crossing a river makes it such a potent symbol?

To cross the Rubicon is to make an irreversible decision; to cross the Jordan is to reach a Promised Land

When one converts to Catholicism they cross the Tiber, but going Prot is crossing the Thames

What's your favorite river crossing?

Late in the day for International Women’s Day, a shout out for some of the best books by female authors I’ve read in the last year.
First up, The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin. How have I never read this book before? A brilliant piece of anarchist sci-fi.
