I have always enjoyed reading, but in the hustle bustle & first 9yrs of faculty life, it didn’t tend to happen. With this sabbatical project however, there is an imperative to have to read (a lot) as a requirement. Refining (& dusting off) some old skills of article skimming, noting, & tracking.

Has been quite a week at the NCAA convention. Lots of discussion, legislation voted one and enacted, and now we have a metric based process for institutions reclassifying to Division I. Also was honored to cast Longwood’s institutional vote to approve the WBB performance fund.
Now back home in am.

Grading complete. Grades posted. Now to put up “On sabbatical out of office until August 2025” message on my email 😎

There are two flavors of faculty in December: numb or ready to burn it all down and walk away.*

Last day of classes. Not back in the classroom until Fall 2025. I have one big project for the Spring. The procrastination from grading has me pondering multiple projects.

Hopefully I can do some planning & roll these out in the fall. Use the time to refocus on what matters & I what I can control.

This popped up as an ad for me in a different SM. Clearly the algorithms are getting better. I feel seen. 😱

I wrote about the death and possible afterlife in of a weird little early college that specialized in teaching weirdos like me.

It was called Simon's Rock.

The Death and Life of Simon's Rock
In the middle of this terrible month - a month made to shamble through, a month which must be endured - I received a far smaller piece of bad news. Simon's Rock, the weird little college for weird kid...

Wrapping up some grading as the semester winds down. Crazy how fast it has flown by. 1 week of classes left. Guess I need to get working on that sabbatical plan…

But turkey prep 1st. 3 🦃 to get brined tomorrow to be ready for the smoker on Thursday.

Accomplishment for the day. Created and refined a ChatGPT script to calculate the number of missed classes for each class time block for a semester based on a sports team travel schedule. And it incorporated in spring break and other university no class days. Small wins! ✅
And yes I manually checked

And if you are wanting to know more about Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, here is her take on overhauling the house of education in 1967.

This one hurts. This was a special place. I will be forever grateful for Elizabeth Blodgett Hall’s grand experiment of 16yr old hs dropouts doing college level work. It is where I met the love of my life. Learned what biomechanics is. Learned how to think. 😢

Reminded my students yesterday that we have 5 class sessions left this semester. 😳

Then I quietly reminded myself, 5 class sessions until Spring semester sabbatical. 😎

Wrapped up the annual Faculty Athletics Rep annual meeting (FARA) this weekend. Great to connect w/ other FARs, hear from current & former student athletes about their experiences, & debate the future of higher education & college athletics.

Biggest takeaway is no one knows & lots of ambiguity.

With all of the influx of users to @bsky.app I wonder how long it will take for institutions (colleges, professional orgs, journals) to move their social media from 🐤 to here. Would guess that engagement drops there will spark more moves than anything else.

Just walked past the gate in the Detroit airport for a flight to Houston. I feel confident that 90%+ of the folks lined up had either a Michigan jersey on or some other paraphernalia. Quite the site.

Received official letter today that my sabbatical for Spring 2025 has been approved! Now to start the planning looking at wearable & performance technology, athlete consent, and what rules should exist around their use.

The time between fall and spring semesters always seems like a great time to get things done…
Then life happens..
Oh well, better luck next academic break 😂

Well year 9 of faculty life is underway with the start of classes yesterday.

Sounds better than the start of year 24 in higher ed. 😬
