Excited to share my new preprint. My work focuses on solitude, but I am not one to advocate for a "solitude theory"; psych has too many theories so one less would be good. So, what I did the past 2 yrs is talking to people, reading work outside of my literature, essentially to shop for a framework 🧵

I looked through my spam and saw an email saying they found my preprint and wanting to publish it. This must be what it feels like to be the main character in a Christmas Hallmark movie: being “discovered” in a coffee shop then finding myself through deciding between love and a big career ✨

This is one of the problems that I feel so helpless about.
Large commercial publishers get very high profit margins (over 30%). Meanwhile, HE institutions, funders, or indiv academics pay for access and APC, and academics peer review for free.

🚨 New Preprint 🚨

Some people are at greater risk of experiencing negative mental health outcomes of social media use than others, but why?

Years ago, I came across the term "parachute sci". It describes when researchers arrive, often in places underrepresented in psychology, with a fully formed study design. The goal is to collect data, not to understand why the question matters in that context or involve local experts in shaping it.

Two-group pre/post data are deceptively simple, and you could analyze them in many different ways, depending on your goals. Here are three blog posts on the topic:

I skipped a few chapters; wasn’t interested in Jensen’s rise to power per se, only in his view on what everyone calls “AI”. The last few chapters get at that: long story short, Jensen is an engineer and not into science fiction lol. Cherry on top is this paragraph about difference btw him and Musk.

On my way back to Durham. I stayed at a hotel near King Cross Station (if I travel with family I’d feel safer staying somewhere less central and taking the tube). I saw many homeless people, more than I remember before. Some put ages on their signs; 20s to late 30s. www.bbc.com/news/article...

My reviewing style has changed over time. Rather than litigate every little thing, and pushing my own ideas, I focus only on 2 things:
(1) Are the claims interesting/important?
(2) Does the evidence support the claims?

Most of my reviews these days are short and focused.

During my MA, I did a bad solitude study. It was correlational, nothing fancy. Trying to publish it anywhere would prolly help my CV. The problem was a well-being measure; I didn’t think it measures anything meaningful; my gut says: “dad wouldn’t be able to respond to the items”. So I scrapped it.

While my academic world is worrying about threats of AI, the conversations I hear from Vietnam is about flooding and that HCMC is sinking at rate of 3cm/year! No stopping it; this means people will need to either raise their ground or start living on floating houses.
