Great to see Mort Subite celebrated here. We went for James Campbell's 40th birthday do, aroubd 2007, I think with @beer4john.bsky.social too. Had a lovely evening. Halfway through the next year James realised he was only 39, so we did it all again the year after.

BLOG POST: What was Rustic Ale? Why have we never heard of it before? And what meaning did the words ‘rustic ale’ convey to drinkers? 🍺🍻

Mann’s Rustic Ale and ideas of authenticity in beer
London brewer Mann’s, best known for its brown ale, also had a product called ‘Rustic Ale’. What meaning were those two words supposed to convey?

NEW VID!

This week we visit St Mars of the Desert – a brewery that rejects style definitions, brews hazy lager, adds mad acids to its mash, hand paints anything that stands still long enough – and happens to make some of the best beer in the world.

Good news everyone, my review of the new cask Boddington’s *is* out today, which includes my thoughts on the beer itself, but also a little history to explain why it’s still very much The Cream of Manchester.

We let a beer guide put us off visiting Liège for too long but when we finally made it to the capital of Wallonia, we loved it.

They are very good but rarely does a British version even from one of the best breweries achieve the Horlicksy malt character the Bavarian ones have. Only a handful manage it. I don't know the reason.

I had a blast today at the Garrett Oliver "meet the brewer" event at the King's Arms in London, not only because I met Garrett Oliver, but also because I had a great time talking to @thornbridgedom.bsky.social, @longm8.bsky.social and @willhawkes.bsky.social.

In February 2024 I visited French & Jupps, the UKs oldest existing maltster, and roasted malt specialist. I’d never heard of them before, despite them being in operation since 1689. It’s story fascinated me, so I wrote it for @pelliclemag.com here:

Brutally hot week in the brewery, but we've smashed our weekly brewing goals, hung out with the Oakham team, bottled a new Necessary Evil barrel variant and now the Premier league is back on the idiot box.
