This might be one of the clearest graphs I've seen for the reasons behind why rich people should donate their surplus income to poor people.

I donate 10% of my income each month to @give-directly.bsky.social and @givingwhatwecan.bsky.social 🙂
I'm able to live normally on the remaining funds.
What does global poverty look like if we rely on the notions of poverty in rich countries like Denmark, the US, or Germany?

And how should this perspective inform our aspirations for the future of global poverty?

Very interesting and important article about equitable access to radical health.
Four attitudes regarding the idea of radical healthy longevity. Which of these attitudes best describes you? dw2blog.com/2025/04/14/c...

Very happy to hear you signed up for the pledge! 🙂

I signed the pledge in 2017 and it is still one of the most important and significant decisions in my entire life 🙂

Hope we can inspire more to pledge and donate 🙂
I signed the 10% Giving Pledge this year, and this week, I decided to donate 19% of my annual income to global health charities.

It's not going to be anywhere near "enough", but I'm happy to do it --
We don't have to sit back and just watch the horror unfold
This month, I signed a pledge to donate at least 10% of my lifetime income to effective charities.

Incredibly heavy article. One of the scariest and most heart breaking texts I've read in a very long time.

If we walk past a drowning child we are just as culpable as when not giving money to those most in need.

At the same time terrible and absolutely fantastically uplifting text, one of the best I have read in a long time 🙂

"Most people want to live longer, and in better health, than nature allows them to.

Someday:
Everyone dies...

...until someone doesn't."

Remember, the Holocaust didn’t start with gas chambers in Auschwitz.

It started with politicians dividing the people with “us vs. them”.

It started with intolerance and hate speech.

It started when people stopped caring, became desensitized, and turned a blind eye.

Remember.

Happy to get inspired by the ageless hydra! 🙂
People often say that ageing is selected for at the species level because immortal creatures couldn’t adapt quickly in changing environments. I’ve always thought this was interesting but was sceptical because ‘group selection’ tends to be evolutionarily unstable.

Biologically immortal hydra agrees:
Hydra has mammal-like mutation rates facilitating fast adaptation despite its nonaging phenotype https://genome.cshlp.org/content/34/12/2217.short?rss=1

It seems like saying "reduced risk of death per year" is clearer.
Though I like "improved chance of survival per year" better 🙂
This confusion is really common… When I say ‘x reduces risk of death’, I often get replies saying ‘but surely risk of death is 100%?!?’
How I feel when people say "if the death rate from cancer is declining, then the death rate from another cause must be rising"

I've been digging into Andrew Scott's paper and found an interesting table modeling a theoretical therapy applied once a year that regenerates either 1 year, 9 months, 6 months, or 3 months of aging at different ages (see table).
