Enthusiast of Southeast Asian history, Chinese folk religion and food. Mainly food.
I'm technically Cantonese but, having been born and raised in Southeast Asia, I am extremely partial to strong, rich, intense flavours. This sambal petai with prawns is one of my favourites.

Never thought I'd get the chance to hear Professor James Warren speak. Really chuffed!

Very excited to be attending Prof James Warren's talk next week. One of my 1st answers on @askhistorians.bsky.social referenced his work on Iranun pirates. His interests include the history of 'ordinary people', like Singapore's Chinese working class.

Peranakan dry laksa.

There are numerous types of laksa dishes. Laksa Johor, for example, uses spaghetti. This one consists of rice noodles fried in a dry spice paste, garnished with finely chopped laksa leaves and littered with prawns and tofu puffs.

My 6-year-old asked me whether our cat had been reincarnated. I said I didn't know, but since he hadn't come to visit over the 7th month... Maybe?

7th month has begun. The gates of Hell open and ghosts roam the earth. There will be many complaints about smoke from burning offerings and spurious arguments about how 'true' Buddhism has no such practice. For me, though, the smoke brings comfort that a tradition is not completely dead... Yet.

If you give a human a keyboard and enough time, eventually he will work 'none of this was ever achieved through carrying a fish basket or having sex with any man who asked' into an answer on @askhistorians.bsky.social about Guan Yu.

Went to Tien Sen Tua temple, then went to the supermarket to buy soya bean milk. Suddenly felt the urge to move the cartons in front aside and found cartons behind with a LATER EXPIRY DATE.

It's kind of disconcerting to rock up to a temple to do the divination sticks, only to be told, 'we don't do divination sticks anymore. Our divination sticks are broken.'

How do you break divination sticks?!

🧵

Some months ago I visited 济正宫 where I picked out divination stick #64. This promised help from the 天水翁 (elder of tianshui). According to 1 interpretation, the 天水翁 is someone from the Tianshui clan or a person from a place with 天 (heaven/sky) or 水 (water) in its name.

A bit miffed at being banned from a Multicraft server over my username.

I was on there with my 5-year-old so what's wrong with calling myself 'Daddy'?

The divination poem I received from this temple in February came true last month. Fascinating full story coming when I work up the energy to put it in words...
With time to spare before a meeting, I explored a temple near the meeting venue. Ji Zheng Gong (济正宫,the Palace of Righteous Aid) is a relatively new temple, having been founded in 2006 by the current boss’ father. Its main deity is the City God of Shishi (Stone Lion), a city in Quanzhou.

There is some debate over when exactly the Middle Ages started. For me, personally, it was that moment I was in Taipei watching Wubai (伍佰) perform 你是我的花朵 and unironically doing the dance with a bunch of other 40+ year olds.

Watching iQIYI's Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty + the CN period drama trope of entering an inn and ordering 1 of everything with no regard for money. I was entertained. I was intrigued. I was inspired to cook kung pao chicken (though it wld not be invented for another 1000+ yrs). Highly recommended.

Not too old to cook Instagram food. An abominable sushi bake that, nevertheless, was delicious.
