Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has stated in a new interview that he would love to spotlight other characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise like they previously did for the Year of Shadow. He said that each year they could choose a theme and spotlight a different character which lives in the Sonic universe. He says that characters which will feature in the movies would play an active role in this.
