🎮Senior Foley Artist II at Sony Interactive Entertainment 🏆Primetime Emmy Award Winning Taiwanese American Trans Woman🏳️‍⚧️ she/her (views are my own)
Went to Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere last year and haven’t stopped thinking about it. It’s Cirque’s longest running show and so much of the technology, set pieces, and talent has changed since its premiere in 93. Yet it retains a sense of wonder: human stakes give the performance meaning

Weapons is the most Junji Ito film i’ve ever seen

had a real bright moment today in Boston when I realized the restaurant I was in had Taiwanese staff and could understand my Taiwanese-American accented Mandarin. They even offered to charge my phone once I started chatting 🥰

haven’t posted here in a hot minute. Touching grass, enjoying life and working on undoing some significant burn out

Will be at GDC Wednesday and Thursday BUT ONLY as an exercise in R&R. For you see, i’m on a little thing called vacation

Piastri reversing out of the green and back onto the track had my entire viewing party SCREAMING. What an absolute banger of a race

So funny getting formative car experiences at age 33. My friends are like "🙄yeah pretty cool huh?”. Meanwhile i'm weeping behind my sunglasses with the windows down, wind in my hair, sunrise in the rearview, sundress flapping, driving to my childhood home. “It’s so beatiful 😭”

Foley is sonic cosplay. You break down the textures, clothing, props, and performance of the character: and then portray them in the world or the story. I say “weaponized asmr” to describe the effect of Foley but in the craft, we are sonically dressing the character. And then, walking the runway.

visited Insomniac Games earlier this week and had an absolute blast presenting some cool Foley concepts to the audio and design teams!! can’t wait to come back soon :))

got to visit the Fox Lot and One Step Up, one of the best Foley studios in the world. I also somehow ended up leaving the gift shop with a Simpsons production cell

every few months, i get a small burst of new followers on instagram or bluesky and i’ve realized, “somewhere, a sound design professor just started a section on Foley and played back the Wired Video or 32 Sounds to their students”

Fun Joanna lore: did you know that of the 6 couples i’ve match made, 4 of them got married/engaged? The 2 that didn’t, one ended up being a long term relationship and the other was my only true flop.

yeah sorry we’ve had this discussion already, “not working for the modern American gestapo” is not actually a form of class privilege

the best Foley team in the world has zero social media presence and the proof is in the pudding.
I see too many people in my industry get caught up in the idea that social media following = career success and skill and that is so far from it. Social “clout” and craft skill are the farthest thing from one another. Spend that time bettering your work.
way too many people still see follower count as a status symbol of prestige or importance when it's really better understood as the unfortunate, burdensome side effect of trying too hard to make like 8 specific people laugh

As someone who transitioned from the highly regimented New York film/tv industry into game development, I can tell yah one thing. besides a design document, there really isn’t an equivalent of an elegant and simple screenplay that every department can use for budgeting and preproduction
just as an outsider with an interest in video game development, and coming from the film industry, it really feels like the game industry has no standardized workflow. every new project gets a bespoke production system with a lot of uncertainty about tasks, roles and who should be doing what
Why do video games cost so much to make these days? A recent NYT article pinned bloated budgets on the graphical arms race, but that's only a small part of the equation. The real problem? Rampant mismanagement.

This week's column is a spicy one: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

after dinner tonight, my parents and I ended up sobbing together in the kitchen after discussing how hard it was to raise a family and how much harder it must be right now with inflation.

this has been such a huge year for personal growth. Presented at GDC, worked on my dream project, actually bought a real bed frame and finally overcame my decades of car anxiety by getting my license and 1st car. worked on my mind and body, lost 40 pounds, and started dating again

That time I brought a box of magic cards to work during my first month at a new job, and somehow made friends along the way
Just watched @spice8rack.bsky.social's excellent dissection of MtG Jumpstart sets. It really resonated with what I do and don't love about this game, as someone who only started playing in 2021 and is now designing a full custom set. Ramble incoming...

my favorite Foley film this year would definitely be The Substance. I haven’t stopped thinking about some key sounds, but as both a Foley artist and shrimp enjoyer, it cannot be dethroned

People often ask me “what’s the most unique or tough sound you’ve had to recreate” and I usually give a pretty relaxed answer, eating grapefruit for dragon hearts or breaking pasta shells for bones. but the truth is, it’s the sounds of innocent people being executed, real people. 🧵
