oh look it’s the thing everyone said wouldn’t happen and hadn’t happened, happening
1. A transgender man was detained in South Carolina for using the restroom that Republicans want him to use.

Officers allegedly hurled slurs at him for doing so.

Trans Man Detained After Using Women’s Restroom in South Carolina
Anti-trans lawmakers want to force trans men to use the women's restroom. Here’s what happened when one did.

Professors can spot AI because we know how to read scholarly work: we pay attention to citations and to whose work is referenced. AI won't make academics redundant, rather AI will make those with the expertise to spot a fake even more important...
But why do my humanities profs tell me not to write my paper with AI....
White House Health Report Included Fake Citations: A report on children’s health released by the Make America Healthy Again Commission referred to scientific papers that did not exist.

This is orders of magnitude worse than anything Claudine Gay was even **alleged** to have done.

It occurred to me today how silly the scarcity argument is in relation to protections for trans and intersex students. So we can have peanut free zones for the roughly 1-2% with peanut allergies but we can't create safe bathrooms and lockerrooms for that same percentage because it's inconsequential?

One just needs to look to Hungary to see where we could be headed. Orban's regime has been a model for US Christian nationalists.
There are people in the UK and Ireland also who'd do this today if we let them. It's our absolute duty to resist that.
Banning Budapest Pride was just the beginning.
Viktor Orban will attempt to introduce more homophobic legislation in Hungary today.
The EU must act now to preserve human rights.

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942.

I know. I was there in those camps.

This seems to reverse the relationship Simone de Beauvoir first diagnosed in 1949 in THE SECOND SEX: woman as Other to man’s Self. Thus, women understand themselves only in relation to men, not as autonomous beings. Here, men are so fearful of a femininity they are helping to bring it into being.
Most men have defined masculinity as not-feminine.

This means that the more women expand their abilities and interests once the domain of men, these men then have to more narrowly define their masculinity.

Soon all that’s left is just the toxic parts.

A little PSA for the "don't speak ill of the dead" crowd: With the passing of Anita Bryant, there will probably be some celebration. Before you criticize, remember this woman leveraged her fame to lobby against gay teachers and led the way in promoting anti-LGBTQIA+ propaganda.

This phenomenon frustrated me when people were making fun of conservatives percieved to be in the closet. Critique a person because of their words and actions, not their Sexuality or gender identity, joke or not.
the “Elonia Musk” thing rests entirely on “ha ha what if he was a woman” and that is so self-evidently transphobic and misogynistic that I do not understand calling yourself progressive and unironically using it as an insult

This is the power of the right's strategy: bring enough issues into political discourse that any resulting "neutrality" is in effect the same as silencing. My students ask "why is this course so political" instead of asking "how did we let the right to exist become a subject for political debate."

I expect to see many of these strategies implemented in other states. Nobody will have to ban courses or overtly silence academic freedom, they will just slowly cut courses from programs and gen ed requirements.
Thanks to our very wise Board of Trustees, one of the courses I normally teach (LGBTQ History), along with 431 others, will no longer count toward the fulfillment of general education requirements. Just another day in the “Free State of Florida.” 🗃️
"The 432 courses that were removed from General Education range from Theories of African American Studies, Critics of Religion and American Multi-Ethnic Literature to Feminism and Globalization, the Evolution of Human Sexuality and LGBTQ History."

2014: only internet is forever. Print pubs and owning physical media are for idiots

people who have never experienced open racism — or open bigotry of any sort — do not appreciate the way it can be psychologically destabilizing. and on the main, it actually isn’t healthy to be so resilient and thick-skinned that you don’t react to slurs and dehumanization

Cis gays: we must stand with our trans brothers and sisters. The disgust you see directed at them is unconscionable, and was directed at us not more than a generation ago. We abandon them, we abandon our humanity.
