This is 100% spot on true. The Republican led Senate report confirmed it in 2016 that legions of bots funded by Russia helped trump convince many of the uneducated to vote for him.
Trump never had a fan base.
He had an army of bots who sold his racism and misogyny and xenophobia to uneducated Americans who took voting advice from bald eagle profiles posting Tweets from Eastern Europe.
