Jessica Taggart, Andrew Kennedy, and I have a new piece out that's about UVA's Faculty AI Guides program, but it's really about how centers for teaching and learning can be key players in an institution's response to disruption. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

Does AI save time or cost/waste time?

Can it do something but not well? Or not well without, extra work on your part?

Is it doing tasks you could do, but you're trying to save on efficiency?

Or is it doing tasks you can't do or can't do well?

For your students?

The 4.0 GPA scale (thanks Yale?) and the letter grade system (Mount Holyoke?) together or separately as a Standardized Measurement has to go. And, don't get me started on the IB 7 points scale or the American use of an IB 5 point scale.

We all know that grades don't necessarily measure much.

Charging for AI Pro on your phone? "Google AI Pro for a year on us ($239 value)." Interesting.

What are you all using these days?

WCAG Compliance - Web Accessibility

What's up at your university or organization?
Any efforts? What tech is the focus?
Delaying until 2027 deadline?
Legal leading it or who?
What else should I be asking?

You know that tipping point with a support unit. They should be supporting you to accomplish your goals and in return positively influence the institutional goals. Yet, you start to feel like they are making your life more difficult rather than providing support. Feels like a barrier than a lift.

So it appears generative AI doesn't read excel files really. Any else having experience with this? Having AI read the data and format it in a Word table for a report? Could read the excel file unless .txt. #DETAAI

And now my thoughts about college admissions.

I appreciate how much they have streamlined it. Common app is sort of great.

I do like the "holistic" idea even though I am not sure how holistic some elite schools are.

But...

Really need college admissions to rethink this November 1st date. Sports are still in process, halloween. November 15th or December 1st would work much better for my schedule. Take note.

Also appears that high schools believe that either you are going to state school or one in the common app.

Tell me about your university/systems tuition discounts for out of state students. Its college application day, so my teen and I decided now was the day to have a serious talk about college. She is very disappointed that I am not writing her a blank check for a quarter million.

The timeout feature on generative AI which stops it from finishing the job is killing me.

If I could pull this data from 100 websites in an efficient manner, I would. You used to, but now, you pull 2-3 at a time and ask if I want more and then don't give it to me. ffs.

I feel like all the universities need to get rid of their out of state, non-resident tuition rate.

I love that I have benefits. They are not as awesome as when I started and part of the reason I took this job, but still great.

But, the amount of time and effort to figure out public university benefits is a lot.

Hope my kid gets a lot of life and health insurance, retirement, etc., but...

it is 2025, and I need everyone to realize there is a way to control how your web pages prints...and I need them to use it. No reason why when I try to print something that the printout isn't comprehendible.
