I think the four pieces I edited by incarcerated queer journalist B Speaks may be the thing I'm proudest of this year. Speaks is an incredible writer, with an ability to take you into the world of the GA prison, and its trans and queer inmates, that takes my breath away.
In August, we got a bit of extra money from a generous donor, and I used it to expand into coverage of trans life in American prisons.

This piece, by incarcerated journalist B Speaks, describes the chaos Georgia's forced detransition regime, currently halted by the courts, wreaked in one prison.
EXCLUSIVE: Forced Detransitions ‘Nearly Toppled’ Medical Unit in Georgia Prison During Care Ban — Assigned
In the midst of a lawsuit, a Georgia prison resumes gender affirming care for trans inmates.

36 years ago today a man entered an engineering class at École Polytechnique de Montréal and murdered 14 women and injured 14 others simply because they were women. I think about these 14 bright young women all the time and did so especially while I was in undergrad becoming an engineer.

If you or a loved one has gone through it, you know how many years, how much paperwork, how much money, and how much stress goes into arriving at your citizenship ceremony. This is so pointedly racist and cruel.
“She showed up as scheduled, and when she arrived, officers were asking everyone what country they were from, and if they said a certain country, they were told to step out of line and that their oath ceremonies were canceled.”

You don't have to look like a character to dress up as that character. You just have to like the character! And it is actually far more polite to just ignore differences than to reach for make-up or prosthetics to cosplay as a different race. Doing that is weird and off-putting.

We have a generous donor who will match up to $75K in reader donations!

Doubling your donation means we can publish more journalism about slime molds and sunflower stars, cormorants and caddisflies; stories that help you feel more connected to the natural world and inspired to protect it.
Remember last year, when bioGraphic and Hakai Magazine were both facing uncertain futures? Your donations saved the day--we raised $140,000 and lived to publish another day!

Now we need help balancing our 2026 budget. Please donate via the link below, and snag some cool stickers to boot!

On Dec. 4, 1977, CBC aired an animated special called A Cosmic Christmas.
It was one of the first productions by a Canadian studio that later brought us Inspector Gadget, The Edison Twins and The Care Bears.
It also led to the creation of Boba Fett.
This is the story.
