Glad to talk to @codohertynews.bsky.social of @irishtimes.com about the upcoming #COP30. There is a real opportunity to make this the most serious COP in history for #adaptation. Hurricane Melissa is just the latest example of why this is so critical.

📣 Ireland’s power system is off coal!

Converting Moneypoint to emergency oil generators is a great idea. Oil can be stored easily, unlike fossil gas that needs complex infrastructure that risks locking in long-term dependence.
RTÉ reporting this morning that the coal-burning units at Moneypoint will become emergency-only oil units starting today 🙌

With Kilroot in Northern Ireland - along with all other coal plants in the UK - having shut down in 2023, it looks like the end of the coal era in these islands.

Wow! Wind energy provided more than 80% of Ireland's electricity yesterday.

Ireland has a target to provide 80% of electricity from renewables - wind and solar - across a whole year, by 2030, by growing solar PV, offshore wind, storage and electricity interconnection.
🚨 A very, very rare wind energy equalling 80%+ of demand day yesterday.

This has only ever happened a handful of times, and not since as long ago as late 2022.

We may be seeing the effects of a few large wind farms that opened late last year. We'll have more analysis later today!
Renewable generation and pumped storage equalled 85% of yesterday's electricity demand, with a peak of 99% at 05:30. Fossil fuel generation (mostly gas) equalled 32% of demand. 14% of generation was exported, 0% of demand was met by imports.
