Protection orders can be a powerful legal tool for survivors—but they’re often misunderstood.

In Washington, survivors can request a protection order after experiencing sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and harassment. Even without police involvement.

LGBTQ+ people experience some of the highest rates of sexual and domestic violence—44% of lesbian women, 61% of bisexual women, and even higher rates among transgender people, especially Black and Indigenous trans women.

Yet too often, legal systems fail to see or support them.

Today Governor Ferguson signed HB 1620 into law. This bill updates and clarifies the parenting plan statute RCW 26.09.191, ensuring courts have clearer guidance on high-conflict family law cases, strengthening protections, and improving outcomes for survivors and their children.

SVLC’s Pro Bono Counsel Sara Mooney appeared before the Court of Appeals today, challenging the denial of a required Order to Surrender Weapons in a DVPO case.

WA law mandates weapon surrender when certain criteria are met—we show up to uphold the rights and safety of survivors. 💜💜

Consent is always clear, active, coherent, willing and ongoing. Remember, consent seeks to make comfortable. Coercion seeks to shame or guilt.
