€38 TOTAL for a family of three to travel in the fanciest class from Verona to Milan, booked a week in advance. Why are the UK's railways so expensive and also shit in comparison? I really want to know! I would read long reads and essays about this. Possibly a whole book.

Yes it's from February 2024, but I actually love the way this piece about Gjirokastër is written. 10/10 read for me. www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-...
The secret Europe mountain city with bargain prices and stunning views
Who wants a Unesco-listed old town, authentic cuisine and gorgeous hotels at bargain prices? You’re better off staying at home, says Holly Baxter

My DK guidebook (co-written with Tristan Rutherford) to #Albania is out in the wild now! If you're planning a trip to this welcoming and beautiful country, please buy a copy. A lot of love and care went into crafting the guide and we blew through the budget on photos and cartography. geni.us/Albania

My various Meta social medias are full of "newspaper" stories about babies rolling off beds or sofas and dying. It's pretty grim that their algorithm determines that this is what women with 9-month-olds see endlessly. I know I should leave them, but it's also good to know your enemy.

Looking forward to the start of the Giro in #Albania today. Cycling commentary is always a nice background to work, and this time it'll be especially relevant. Here's a shameless plug of my guidebook to Albania, coming out in July. #TravWriters www.dk.com/uk/book/9780...

When I worked a proper job with an Outlook email, colleagues enjoyed that my name displayed as Pope Suzy.

This would have been prime Pope joke time.

This is the best time of year in Edinburgh. Before the festival crowds, sometimes the sun shines but the water still comes ice cold out the tap.

Watching The Magic Roundabout and Bagpuss with baby Maeve. She's not that bothered but I'm having a great time. Trying to introduce her to all the important British culture young. Mr Blobby is next.

Say what you like about AI, it'll never be able to replicate the sheer desperation of a student essay written at 4am, having done neither research nor reading, fuelled by Richmonds, instant coffee, and the near-certainty that you've wasted three years of your life.

Shhhh don’t tell everyone but…. the Times paywall is down this weekend. That means you can read about my adventures.

I've a big piece in The Times (Scotland) today about restaurants with rooms. While I didn't bang on about sustainability (that much) in the text, it's all places independently run and owned by chefs using local produce in their kitchens. I'm proud of this one.

I love this piece in BBC travel by my guidebook co-author. www.bbc.com/travel/artic...
The grannies who saved Albanian cuisine
After being sealed off from the outside world for decades and experiencing a mass exodus, Albania is leaning into its culinary roots with the help of grandma chefs.

The highlights of bumping around Berlin with a 7mo old baby for a few days:
🌳Wandering the Tiergarten
🇩🇪 Visiting the dome of the Reichstag
🛥️ A one-hour boat trip on the Spree
🍻 Drinking weissbier in das beerhall while the baby looks on in awe.

Baby's first cross-border European train is about a year earlier than anticipated due to airport strikes in Germany. I'm secretly pleased with this outcome. Choo Choo! 🚂🚂🚂

I was very nervous about a 5-hour flight by myself with a small, wriggly baby. But we were blessed with a whole row, aka baby business class. Now I foolishly believe we can go anywhere and it will be just as easy. (Photo of her playing with infant life jacket)

I am so bad at taking photos. So so bad. For the tenth time in my life I've had to watch the disappointment and polite grimace as a tourist in Edinburgh asks me to take their picture and I do a very very bad job. He took a nice one of me and Maeve though...

Husband bought me some very nice noise-cancelling headphones for Christmas and I immediately asked how to switch off the noise cancelling part. Because I want to wear them when I go out walking alone, as a woman.

Ok, yes, in 2024 I had a baby. But I also co-wrote a guidebook to Albania and even though it doesn't look up at me with big eyes or burble happily in me ear, it still has a piece of my heart and soul. Published in July 2025 :) www.waterstones.com/book/dk-alba...
