Today’s SCOTUS decision on birthright citizenship sadly confirms the argument of my essay that published today: We are in a once-in-century battle for civil rights, and therefore, democracy.
I've covered race for two decades. I knew the 2nd Trump Admin would be dangerous for civil rights. Yet the collapse of the federal civil rights architecture and national will to address racial inequality and work on integration is stunning. Here's my latest. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/m...

It's hard to explain to people outside this fight that Texas is currently trying to ban kids from using public libraries... but they are; it's passed out of committee, and it's going to a floor vote.

🚨If you know ANYONE in Texas it's time for them to call their reps and demand NO ON HB3225🚨
Bad. Despite the voucher debate, the Tx State Affairs committee met and voted FOR HB3225. This bill would require public libraries to have age restrictions and cordone off parts of the library as inaccessible to teens. @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social @penamerica.bsky.social @everylibrary.bsky.social

Happy spring equinox! Our Araucana hen laid her first egg of the season 2 weeks ago, and 2 days ago several chipmunks came out from their winter hibernation/torpor, and the migrating flock of band-tailed pigeons that come every spring appeared!
