Organic apple farmer and nursery owner in Sonoma County, CA. Check out http://littleappletreats.com for some good stuff! Here for ideas, mostly on climate and nature—plants and birds and rocks and things. Opinions my own.
A strain of Rome Beauty from our orchard called a Law Rome. The red skin stains the flesh when the nights get cold.

Just finished watching a birdwatching documentary called LISTERS. It’s a 10/10, 5-star, two claws up experience. And free, with no commercials at the moment, on YouTube.

Harvested and dried our Ashmead’s Kernel apples. A ripe Ashmead’s is an in-your-face apple: high acid, high sugar. An apple that solo drives a red convertible with the top down in the carpool lane during rush hour.

Just a quick phone pic, but I couldn’t resist. California skippers had all but disappeared from our garden a few years ago, but seem to be on the rebound. I’ll be zinnia soon, l’il buddy!

This Gravenstein apple tree across the road from my farm is about 90 years old and hasn’t been tended to in about 40 years, maybe more.

Pink Pearl apples. Still on the tart side, but ready to pick. Their interior color is the best I’ve seen thanks to a cooler-than-typical summer so far.

Sebastopol Gravenstein apples—I only manage to eat several a day when they’re in season.

The Yellow Bellflower apple was supposedly George Washington’s favorite apple, and I have a tree that bears generous amounts of fruit.

The apples are awful. Easily my least favorite variety. Maybe it’s a tree that doesn’t like the West Coast. I wish o could figure it out.

An old walnut tree, a remnant of a long-gone orchard, just starting to leaf out. Seen on my walk this evening.

Historic apple tree dating back to French settlers in the 1600s has been identified in Maine. My first thought: when can I taste it?

www.bangordailynews.com/2025/05/04/h...
One of North America’s oldest apple trees found on Maine island
Called the Drap d’Or de Bretagna, the cultivar came from France, likely brought to Maine by Castine’s early French settlers in the late 1600s.

Only the biggest, best countries. This country came up to me, a real massive one, and he had tears in his eyes, and he said to me sir, thank you for these tariffs, it means a lot to my family — we’re gonna, we’re gonna, and it’s just an absolute disgrace and shouldn’t be happening.
Weeks after the administration promised 90 trade deals in 90 days -- none have happened yet -- Brooke Rollins says "we have 100 countries that are knocking on the door."
