Director J.J. Abrams and "Scotty" actor Simon Pegg on the Delta Vega set of STAR TREK, with Leonard Nimoy in the background. Pegg was famously offered the role of Scotty by Abrams via email. Pegg admitted to Vanity Fair that the way Abrams offered him the part annoyed him: "The tenacity of it irked me... But of course three or four days later I was like 'Yes, of course!' But it just felt like such a ... like he was just handing me this massive opportunity, and I wanted dinner and a movie."

Designed by TREK veteran John Eaves, the interior of the military shuttle also stood in for the USS Kelvin's shuttlecraft cockpit. Scenes for the Starfleet Academy hangar were filmed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, California not far from Los Angeles.

Chris Pine and J.J. Abrams on the set of the Kobayashi Maru simulator. The simulator set was a redress of the bridge of the USS Kelvin with minor changes including brighter lighter and new control interfaces. The set was designed by production designer Scott Chambliss.
