"We [EU] pursued a deliberate strategy of trying to lower wage costs relative to each other – and, combine this with a procyclical fiscal policy, the net effect was only to weaken our own domestic demand and undermine our social model"
Let's not do that again
This is “indicative of a slowing pace of structural change.”
Of course, I can already hear the reply:
"Yes, but this time it will be different…" 😏
Even ignoring the massive 1970s deindustrialization, the 2000s were more turbulent than today.
Job reallocation across sectors?
It actually peaked in 2011.
Even COVID disruption didn’t match it.
Once, it represented 300 mining locals.
Today: zero mines. Zero miners. Now *that* is a transformation
No.
First it was big data.
Then digitalization.
Now AI.
This is my third season of the hit series:
“Crazy times in the labour market ahead!”
But this time it’s different, right?
…Probably not.
